I am one of those evil parents who refuse to use the sunscreen because of all the chemicals in it. People give me the strangest looks when I tell them not to lube her up at school water play days. You would think I grew a pair of horns. Funny enough she never ever burns, even after being in the sun all day. That might be because her daddy is latin and she turns into a brown berry in the summer.

just be careful that burning is not the only form of sun damage -- there are lots of non-chemical sunblocks out there (those that use zinc or titanium as a physical block; they are not all like that chalky white stuff that we tend to associate with lifeguard's noses), and lots of people who never burn can end up with skin cancer. my stepfather, who was a non-sunburning geologist who did most of his field work in deserts, died years ago from melanoma, so it's an issue i've had some direct experience with.

Since I have been looking for something just like the sun block you describe, where have you found it? I haven't been able to locate the better ones. If I am not mistaken didn't someone on here just make their own? I swear I read that, but it was when I was in the middle of moving and couldn't save it anywhere.

Wow! Rickets is not a good thing! I am going to have to have my doctor check my Vit D level the next time I go in there. Maybe I'll send her a message and ask her about it. I'm not a big proponent of supplements but not being able to go out in the sun plus being intolerant of dairy limits my natural sources. Of the top 10 food sources, the only ones that I eat now are fish, eggs, and mushrooms.

I did some research on sunscreens and ended up ordering 2 different ones that are broad spectrum SPF 30 with zinc oxide, no nanoparticles, petroleum-free, paraben-free, and biodegradable. One is Badger Zinc Oxide Sunscreen Cream and the other is Burn Out Clean and Clear Zinc Oxide Sunscreen for sensitive skin. I've been happy with them so far but then, I've been staying out of the sun while my skin heals. Everything has cleared up except for the ends of 3 fingers on my right hand.

This is the Badger one that I purchased. I don't see it currently offered separately from the face stick. There are other Badger sunscreens with scents but I am sensitive to scents so I chose this unscented one.

Have the Dr. test for Vitamin D for sure. I am sure you will need to take a supplement.

The Sunscreens had to be reformulated because they caused skin cancer.

Apparently, sitting under a tree or getting out of the direct sun is enough protection.

this is my current favorite -- notice they specify it's a *mineral* sunblock, not chemical sunscreen -- i absolutely love it!

gotta say, dogs/canids don't tend to leave puncture wounds, they tend to tear -- nor do they focus on the throat the way felids do. speaking from wildlife ecology perspective rather than lots of chicken experience, though.

My vet friend got busted by Animal control yesterday! He is on the line too, so he has been Ok for years.  I'm housing his 4 boys until  he can take them to he cousin over Thanksgiving. Omg THEY need rooster collars.  Luckily I had just moved the quail, because all his boys need to be housed separately because they are Large games.  

3 of them are  easy to handle, but the stag is 5 years old and  mean.  I had to set up food and water so  I dont have to open the pen. 

God they are impressive, however. They youngest is a wuss so he got  put in general population.   Flame, my showgirl roo, and my guinea have been challenging them  through the wire all day.  Its a madhouse out there. I find it interesting its the roosters on the lower part of the pecking order who challenge the new roos.   Flame still defers to Orlando as head boy, but  has decide he is second in command and   keeps all the young boys in line. Hes so slight its really funny  when they mixed pre dinner boys run from him, they are all twice his size. 

The hens have been checking the new boys out too. the newest layers have been hanging by the stag, and he is trying to feed them through the wire.   Since they don't have a special protector I think they are looking for one....

It is nice of you to watch the Roosters until they can go to their new home.

Haha so..... You want three serama Roos? Hubby found out they are cold intolerant and it's a no go.


But my little lone basque is as sweet as the olandsk I hatched this year. Do we have a little boy?
