Where do you have the genotype testing done? How do you trial them for immunity?

Cornell bred the K and C strain Leghorns that had only a 3% or so death rate from Marek's.

The immunization does prevent tumor growth in most cases and it has to be done on the first day of life.

I think you trial them for immunity by by having the ones that catch mareks die. Dead chickens have no chicks

I personally don't think the average backyard flock can keep their chicks unexposed to maraks for long enough for the vaccine to ttake effect. 14 days is a long time to not get exposed to dander by you seeing your other chickens. And if it is outside with a broody? Even less chance.

The hatcheries vaccinate in the egg So they come out immune. And even that is not a sure thing.

The last talk I had with us Davis on the topic just depressed me.

Clearly you have done some research on the topics too so I'm interested in your opinion:).

Have you guys seen this?? I am cracking up here. Ron I hope it doesn't take too much attention from your NYD hatchalong hahahaha

I just finished reading the whole thread. She has a very understanding partner...held the eggs in his arm pits while she showered...for the first time in 5 days

I do think that a well endowed gal probably is able to keep them warmer than 98.6 and it sounds like that is where she is keeping her eggs.

BTW Ron Tom will be training for his new job in...WOODLAND for the next two weeks. I am coming down for a night on Thursday and we are going out to dinner. any recommendations?

I did this once after a hen jumped off the nest and I needed to warm up the incubator LOL

Thanks for the welcome everyone!

We have a small backyard operation here (we live on a 1/3 acre in a highly residential area), but DH thinks we live on a farm haha. I'm not much for a lawn so we've turned almost all of our property into a vegetable garden or animal shelter. Last summer we turned our entire front yard into an organic corn farm. I think my neighbors believe we are crazy.....

For chickens we have a trio of Lav Orps, 1 blue & 1 black copper Marans, an EE, a frizzle Olive Egger, a GLW, a RIR, a Barred Rock, 6 blue Breda (only keeping 1 having to grow out to find the best girl), a Freedom Ranger meat roo that was saved from freezer camp, and a few Olive Egger (BCM over SBEL) chicks still in the brooder.
I hatched Blue Isbars, Appenzeller Spitzhauben, Super Blue layers, & Blue Salmon Favorelles, but all my chicks were killed over the course of a few weeks by an evil opossum along with my silkies.

We also have a pair of turkeys left and I just had about 40 coturnix quail hatch over night. And I have some ducks coming in January, thought I would give them a try

They wear them all day and do not seem to mind them. It does make them quieter and one is not even crowing any more.

I am going to make one of my own today or tomorrow.
Do you take them off at night? I sewed one yesterday for my Pita Pinta who is slated for the dinner table. He is a crowing fool. At night, anytime the tiniest bit of light hits the igloo coop, he crows. He crows often through the day, too. If the collar doesn't work to quiet his crow, he is going to the farm. My second PP cockerel is also crowing just not as often or loud. I really want to keep this flock here in town but the collars will have to work for them in order for me to keep them here. I wish that I had taken a movie of him when we first put it on him yesterday. He kept moonwalking backwards with his head down. I might have to change his name to Michael Jackson!

The collars stay on all the time.

I hope it works for you enough to keep them with you.

The Pita Pintas do seem to me more animated.
