yeah Im getting resistance lol. Id like to have one for every breed so that way I could hatch enough breeders

Haha! I can't imagine! You make such nice set ups for your birds... As long as you want to keep building why not :)

I'd love to have ONE of your set ups for my flock!

:)   I look at all kinds of things and think about how they would work in my chicken world.  I keep thinking about buying one of those big gorilla shelves they have at Costco and turn it into a multi-level chick brooder.  I love neat ways of using vertical space since I am so limited on horizontal space.
Oh PetRock, I think we should hang out some time! I could use that ingenuity. That post of yours was an aha moment for me. Keep it coming :)

Talked to my dad on the phone today. He grew up on a farm in Iowa during the Great Depression. One of his chores was gathering the eggs from the hen house. He and my stepmom are snowbirds and winter in AZ. He went to Walmart the other day for some groceries and came home laughing at a conversation about eggs that he overheard while waiting in line. He is thinking about sending it in to Reader's Digest. He wrote it up for me so I could share it with you!

"I was at Wal-Mart in the check-out lane. The man ahead of me was buying a dozen eggs. He said to the check-out clerk, "Are these hen eggs?" She said, "Yes, I guess so." He said, "Last time I bought brown eggs and my wife made me bring them back. She wanted hen eggs, not rooster eggs. Brown eggs are rooster eggs and I don't want them!" The check-out clerk was speechless!"

My dad said that the man was completely serious.

Are you going to the Stockton poultry show??? I'm going to be there all day on Saturday!

yes. I will get crele ( single barred hens ) the idea is by breeding those offspring to my double barred rooster
the chicks that hatch will be crele. So then by using the pea combed crele hens with the pea combed crele rooster will
hopefully yield fully auto sexing olive eggers that look like the crele penedesenca.

The silver Ameraucana is the best mate for the crele roosters for this project
Oh wow! That sounds awesome!! I am really impressed over here. I'm on my phone so I can't do really cool emoji characters doing a high five. But if I could, I would for this project of yours!

I am, and can't wait! I will look for you. Are we supposed to wear name tags or something? I will end up asking everyone there if they're from this forum or not.

Allow me to ramble;
I am asked if my chickens are pets or livestock which has been difficult to answer because if livestock, why do I keep chickens when I can buy eggs or meat cheaper in the store? Or, if they are pets, why do I ruthlessly cull and eat them? I also don’t personally embrace the “I raise my own food for health reasons” idea, so that doesn't fly. At least not for me.

I have come to see that my flock is my pet. Not any individual bird. Now I enjoy all the individual personalities, even the trouble makers. But when part of the flock is endangering the whole, it has to go. So I’m curious, why do you keep chickens?

My chickens are definitely pets.

I am allergic to most fuzzy pets, and all kinds of hay/grass which is what many other pet animals eat. I had a chinchilla until he passed away, but I had to admit that it was only because he lived in a confined space that I was able to manage the allergies. I still miss him.

Diego, my standard grey chinchilla. 2 June 1999 - 27 May 2009

My next choices were reptiles or birds. Parrot family birds seemed way too hard. Chickens had the benefit of living outside, so even if I turned out to be allergic to feathers (I seem to be allergic to some down linens but not others), it would be easier to manage. I didn't specifically rule out reptiles, but didn't find one I was specifically excited about. And chickens seemed cuter.

I was actually a little surprised at how much I grew to care about my girls... I had never really thought about birds as pets before. But now, I visit them every morning before I have my own breakfast, and wish them good night every night. They all have names, I talk about them with everyone I know, and I miss them when I am out of town. I definitely missed having a pet, and they fulfill that part of my life.

Have you all ever seen a frizzled bantam cochin? I saw one at the show. It was almost a perfect round circle of feathers. Like a feathered bowling ball. I didn't get a picture but I sure stopped and stared at it for a while.

I have a frizzle bantam cochin! She won't be in any show though... she has a crossbeak.

Violet, 16 weeks old.

I keep thinking about going to this show this weekend, but I don't want to drive there by myself, and I can't get any more chickens anyway. But... anyone from south bay area interested in carpooling on Saturday and coming back the same day?
