I didn't know that.
The age of the Ovum has been a theory for more Downs syndrome babies being born to older mothers.

Of course it could be from a lifetime of exposure to Mutagens. It is much more complicated of course.

My first PIta Pinta/Langshan chick has hatched!!!  :jumpy  I will post pics once they finish hatching and have fluffed up.  We had 6 pipped out of 11 last night when we went to bed.  Monet wanted to know if I was going to stay up all night watching them.  I laughed and told her no but then I couldn't sleep.  I kept waking up and then had a terrible dream that the chicks had gotten out of the incubator.  Our cat had caught one before I could get them back in the incubator.  I decided to go ahead and get up at 4 to check on them.  The first one was sitting with it's head out of the shell so of course I couldn't go back to bed.  I'm cleaning house, checking the incubator, reading emails, checking the incubator, cleaning house, checking the incubator, etc.  You get the picture!  It is going to be a long but beautiful day!  I love new life!!! :love

Awesome! Congrats! Happy hatching. I can't wait to have mine start pipping and hatching... Day 11...

Excited to see pictures! :jumpy

In order for a medicine to make permanent changes to an ovum, it would have to be a mutagen. Humans are the same--Born with all the eggs they will every have and those eggs sit until they develop.

I am pretty sure we do not give mutagens as medicine so the chemicals used would disperse. That is what withdrawal is for. I do not think all the eggs in a hen would be contaminated just the 5 or so that are closed to being laid.
Here is an interesting scientific study about eggs contamination. Below is the conclusion, but study can be found at:

CONCLUSIONS
"There are a large number of studies describing drug deposition
and depletion from chicken eggs, but these are scattered
throughout the primary literature. In this review, these data
are compiled for easy reference to aid understanding and draw
attention to the often overlooked issue of veterinary drug
residues in eggs. It is important to note that laying hens deposit
veterinary drugs from a wide variety of drug classes into their
eggs, and residues can persist for some time after treatment has ended."

Ok I have to ask you bio folks. Aren't all females that carry eggs carrying all the eggs they will have? I thought every female was born with about a million eggs or some such....

ok I need a little help with the brinsea. I'm beyond frustrated.
I got the octagon 20 advance ex. their SITE says this model can hold up to 24 eggs. But the pamphlet says with the humidity pump I can only do 16 at a time! I called them and they said
1. don't use the foam.
I asked about the 16 eggs they said:
2. the humidity strip, if it touches the eggs will ruin them. that's why you can't do over about 16
3. the lady said to lay the eggs down on their side in incubator. I've NEVER heard of this. Will they still rotate well if they are on their side the whole time? I thought they had to be big end up. that's how my hova bator worked.

I would appreciate all the input on this model from anyone who knows.
@ronott1 - you said you pack them full, but do they touch the humidity strip in your 40?

thanks for the help,

Yes, but they are follicles and need to be leutinized to develop by a hormone. Only so many are in that stage so the article about persisting residue from medicine would be for those egg cells. It is something to be aware of.

thanks for the help,
I have the 40 which is like a double 20. The humidity strip is way above the eggs so it does not touch them.

I might have a picture of eggs set in the basket.

I have 18 big marans egg in this one. If I took out the foam I cold get another row in there and smaller eggs would add more. I fit 22 in with Dorking eggs.

Thanks Ron, is your foam on the outter most edges or just in the middle dividers? If you don't use the foam, do you have issues with the eggs falling out a lot?
It looked like the humidity strip hung down CLOSE to the eggs but I couldn't tell if they were touching. Brinsea said they will touch so they said to lay the eggs down where the strip is. Maybe if i could tilt them it would work.
I guess I could just try it. with the strip it sounded like the middle eggs would go bad. But I don't want to pay for shipping back and forth and add $250 for the other one.

My first thought is you could put smaller eggs in the middle? Well shorter eggs. Silkie serama quail d'uccle oegb...
