They are cute! The line up shot is really a good one!
Thank you, Kim! It was so nice talking with you at the show on Saturday! I am looking forward to seeing your Delawares at a show in the future!

For those with the brinsea brooders: I believe it says they cover 20 chicks 1-2 weeks. So do you have 2 -3 for after that? Seems like a lot of $$ for just a couple weeks
They do fine until they are 6 weeks old with 20. They do the penguin type of rotation. They do not even stay under it that much after two weeks or so.

I was on a thread that compared the electricity cost of running an eco glow compared to a heat light--the eco glow paid for itself in a couple of months of use.

The premier1 is less expensive and bigger too.

Yes ...it certainly did go crazy! Glad it's over now. I feel bad for my part in it, but it's kind of like someone saying "Everyone gets free ice cream, except those people with brown hair". It's frustrating when they are such gorgeous chickens but they are saying we can't bid on the eggs with no explanation as to why. I will have to go back thru the thread and try to find where she explained why not. It's a loooong thread though so it might take me a while. I did PM here and got a reply this morning saying I she would put me on the waiting list, so that made me happy. :D I have 4 Marans and they are laying what looks to me like about 4-5, but may not even be that dark. The eggs in the picture are about 2 weeks old. The girls just started laying in early January and I am approaching a total of 30 eggs from all 4 now. I don't know if they will get darker. I was hoping to get some that lay darker eggs and, while I know hatching from dark eggs doesn't guarantee they will lay dark ones, I hear it increases the chances. I can't have roosters here so can't raise my own. I have to depend on getting them from someone else. Do you klnow if there is any difference in hatch rate using a good broody versus a bator?
If I remember correctly she has kids who show and sh dosnt want to compete with her own birds. But it is not uncommon for some breeders and showers to not sell eggs or roosters in their state. They will often make exceptions but that is complicated to say in an ad. She's done it that way for years so not like it is just these birds. I know she bends it for people but I don't know about those discussion s. I think those eggs are darker then you think unless you caught the color exactly or they are your darkest eggs. Those are not 4s. Are your Marans fcbm or some other? Debs flock and Pam in paradise are both working on very dark eggs. What type of incubator do you have and do your broodies get disturbed by other chickens?

thanks for adding Pam!

Pam, Deb and SunnyDawn are working together on the dark egg project.

Reno, Auburn? and Paradise.

I love Blues, too (hens the blue Wyandotte in my avatar), but really want the very dark eggs. Papa's Poultry had an auction for a combination of BC/Blue/Splash that I probably would have gone for but it looked like it was already over by the time I saw it. It had been "bumped" a couple of days before, but when I asked about it he said he didn't really have any ready quite yet. I'm still not real sure on how those auctions work yet...
Sunny on the Nevada thread is working on very dark eggs. Her BCMs are such great quality that Debi at Heaven Sent Ranch just replaced her best rooster she lost with one that Sherylreno (Nevada) had gotten as a chick from Sunny. She said he is perfect and it is hard to find BCM roosters with proper color. Sunny has very poor reception where she lives so if you PM her and don't hear back you might be able to contact her through Sherylreno.

I hatched 35 chicks,  problem is  they started hatching a day early while I was at the stockton show and I did not have them separate  by breed and three of the breeds I hatched are yellow (Bresse, Basque and Sulmtalers).  Good luck telling them apart now.   :idunno  I just listed them on craigslist as mystery chicks.

This made me snort coffee. I hate it when that happens!!

Ok, i'm looking at Brinsea's candlers. I'm a bit confused. Is there 3 different ones? Is Ova View do ok even though it's not the OvaScope? seems like I don't need the scope if i'm in a dark room. Then I see them on Amazon with different names and different prices. I want to be sure I'm not paying top dollar for the cheap one on Amazon too. Are there other great candlers out there?

I still love my 10 home made candler the best. It's a 450 lumes flashlight and a plumbing piece.

OH MY GOD I NEED PINK EGG LAYERS

Yes the croads are impressive

I live in elk grove. Considering a small coop with 4 chickens. Any suggestions in the area for purchasing and does anyone know the ordinance in this area.

Costco has a 170 5 chicken coop atm. Good buy

The little peddler marans at the show were culls for sure. I was very happy with my marans purchase however. I got a pair from Peter orvill. The cockerel was stunning with coloring like louie good tail set and perfect eye. He needs more weight but even if he stays a bit small my hens are all fat and sassy and will pass it on. One of his toes is light but not a big deal. I have been waiting for eggs from Peter for 2 years so I'm happy!

That is great news!

Gosh, northern californians, it's a smaller world than I though!

Saturday at the Stockton show, I took a picture of a mille fleur cock that had beautiful coloring.

Then Sunday night I was thinking about all the beautiful Ameraucanas I saw at the show and looked up breeders. I emailed a few that are near me.

I also decided to message the Facebook page "Belgian bearded d'uccle"

The girl that has the page emailed me back and we were talking. She asked me if I'm the same person who emailed about the Ameraucanas! Her mom one of the two Ameraucana breeders I emailed! And then I showed her the D'uccles I got, and I sent her a photo of one I thought had nice coloring. It was her rooster!

What are the odds?!
