California - Northern

I have been posting recently and STILL had a hard time catching up today....... Geez you all are chatty today!!! Good thing I love chatty!

It's all my fault. I admit it. Someone should take the initiative and start a FB page or something. I like having the global community, but there's something to be said for making local connections. And 3400 pages of meandering conversation is just a wee cumbersome. lol

Such a sweet sound….my husband is turning an old horse stall into a coop! I suggested we put chicken wire on the front. His idea: board it up and add a run. Even better!!

Men! What are they good for!
Gent there is a cali, nor cal and silicon valley fb pages. The Cali ones is busiest.

.

When I joined the convesation I just started from that point. I would still be reading if went back to the first post. If someone refers to something post before that I just do a search of the thread.

I actually prefer this to FB...the interaction seems to be more immediate. I am on a BC Marans group on FB and it seems more cumbersome there. This seems more "intimate" .

:pop  Let us know!

Call Ducks or Yellow house farms...Maybe even one of the others from the Heritage thread did that experiment. He said that they hatched fine as long as the egg did not crack.

There may be a problem with frozen eggs and de compression?

Wow that is interesting.

Do you know if air sacs are more stable on fresh eggs than old eggs?  I can't understand why almost all the eggs had floating air sacs when it does not seem like they were bounced around.  Perhaps it is air compression.   Its a mystery to be solved.

I just read in an article about shipped eggs that once eggs are received and GENTLY unpacked they should be allowed to sit large end down for 12-24 hrs BEFORE being turned (again very gently) and placed in the incubator. Also Do not over handle or candle for a minimum of five days. This process allows the "thread like" mucus that holds the airsac to re-affirm the connection and fewer eggs are lost. I currently have 9 eggs in my bator that were delivered in a damaged box (that was obviously thrown around) the shipper originally sold me 12 but included three extra. Upon receipt the box was so badly smashed and mishandled 6eggs were broken! I followed the above procedure and all 9 remaining eggs are developing. I saw movement of a chick (inside ALL the eggs) for the first time ever!!! I'm so excited it worked!!!

on shipped eggs they sit out a day. I will not turn them for 5-7 days either

That is interesting. I know about letting them "settle" but have always heard to do it large end up, not down. Since air rises, it seems more logical to put them large end up. Was there and explanation of why the opposite is better?

Wholy cow I must sound like that came from left field. I cannot believe how long this thread is and it started back in 2007. OMG. Person I was responding to, probably doesn't even post here anymore.

Hahaha people pop in here all the time saying where they live and why it is in Northern CA. We don't care either way and welcome all! Hope you stay!
FYI.........there is a new BIN listing for the Mottled AM eggs on the Crazy 24 hour Auction thread again. $45 plus $15 for shipping for 10+ eggs. When I won the auction she shipped 15, but one cracked. I just candled and it looks like 10 out of the 14 left are developing......
Fantastic News! I saw that listing...hope one like it appears at the right time for me!

Mine are like yours & certainly not daily layers but worth the dark egg. Some lay better than others but I don't want to go through the process of separating each to find out who's who.....LOL
Thanks...I think maybe I "need" to keep two Marans. I can always keep an additional redstar girl or two to make up the difference in production

I love supportive chicken men! When I locked myself in the coop yesterday I was panicked BUT I was also really proud of my man's workmanship. He really worries about the safety of the birds.

You will get used to the pace if you hang out and I think you will find this to be a really communal group. Hope so we would love to have you hang out.

In news round here today is day 14 for the broody hatch. I am thinking I should bring the two bantam eggs in and put them in the bator for hatching.
How do I do that?
When do I do that? I would be using the LG.

The reason is I am afraid that the bigger LF chicks will smoosh them. Also that broody mom will get up and abandon the LF eggs when the bantams hatch. I didn't think about that when I set a mixed group of eggs. I won't do it again

I just imagined you all panicked, then STOP and appreciate the workmanship. Then resume panic. Supportive men are awesome

Hello. I'm brand new to this thread. Im a first time BYC person but have reading a lot in the last 6 months we've owned our new house in the mountains, Forest Ranch (12 miles north of Chico, CA). I started with 6 chicks. Three Rhode Island Reds and three Barred Rocks from the local feed store here in Chico. The Reds seem to get the pasty butt thing as I've cleaned them off every couple days since I've gotten them on Friday but the BR's have been super clean. In the latest pictures they were alittle frightened with the. Camera in their faces. Can anyone tell by the pictures how old they might be? I'm thinking around ten days or maybe two weeks as I'm unsure how old they were when I got them.
