I think @chickee should do a seminar on hatching Marans. She's had AMAZING hatches! Oh to be a fly on the wall at her house

Thank-you. I think that is very nice of you to say

I don't incubate them any different than my other eggs. It does help to have an Octagon 20 ex advance, keep the humidity at 40% and use eggs from your own, healthy stock that the rooster is not related to the hens

The one that is built in on the FI is basically useless and even says "for reference only". It might be closer than the accessory one though. 10% versus 50-67% is not even close!!.

Now....how to remove some of the liquid without disturbing the eggs too much.......

No birds were in the pen while the gate was open and no birds were harmed. :DI think it's amazing how much wildlife comes around, especially now because of the drought.

i actually love seeing these pictures, such cool animals! since they are always around us, it definitely seems wise to just built predator-proof (or, as predator-proof as possible) pens!

No...it can't be calibrated. But the salt water method @chiqita suggested seems like it will give a more acurate reading and then I could just adjust it to compensate for the difference. I don't really have time to order a new one for this clutch since they are due to hatch Friday. I don't know if TSC carries them.

cailbrate usualy just means make a not of how off they are.. dont think any are adjustbale, but who knows!
But they would be spraying away from you and not at you. Still don't want my yard resking of skunk for the next few months.

We use the Humane traps so I'm not sure they could get their little butts high enough to spray over their heads, but I don't want to find out!
have a heart traps= spray over head.

Juststruttin............I have wanted to learn under someone that knew and felt comfortable teaching others. Been to chicken (fun pun) to try on my own! I would like to be included in your processing of your roos, hopefully I can make the chore go faster. I am about 4 1/2 hours north of you and early April/ late March would work for me! thank you for offering, Rochelle

Sure, you are more than welcome to join us. I will send you a pm when we have a date picked out. My friend who helps me is going to New Zealand for 2 weeks on Monday which is why I need to wait 3.5 weeks.

oh, and re: our discussion of maps and what different parts of the state are called, from last week, has anyone read yet about this proposal?

http://www.businessinsider.com/tim-drapers-six-californias-2014-2

the guy proposes to split CA into six states, one of which ("Silicon Valley") instantly be the wealthiest state in the country, and other of which ("Central California") would be the poorest. very strange, but apparently they are trying to get enough signatures to get it onto the November ballot...

Guess which one he lives in...

Someones theory is that the needy parts of the state would get more fed money but it will never happen. As someone said no one is giving us 12 senators.

So I had a so called pullet and chick die on me thursday. Sent them into davis. Assumed chicks needed corid so started it.

Chicks did NOT respond to corid at all. They were all drinking but lost a few more so I switched to the s one. Got the report is is cocci. Im worried I have a strain that isnt responding. These chicks are not 4 weeks old so I didnt start pretreatment.

The "pullet" (surprise it was a boy! Silkies **** you! Way to ad insult to injury davis!) Has no findings but was skinny. No worm eggs

Could I need to lower the protien and give more carbs? Silkies prefer the pheasant feed that is Like 28% so I give them that with vitamins and fussy stuff for egg production and the occational fodder and sprouted wheat treats.

None of them seem plump. Now im worried.

Preliminary report?

Are they trying to grow cultures? I would give them a max of 20% protein.

I hope the final report will help you more.
