California - Northern

We do hatch in cartons. There is always at least one born with all-wheel drive! The one greeting this new hatcher flopped itself all over to get around and say high. Once it was fluffy we had to remove it. It wasn't even dry and treated the egg cartons like they were part of the fun! Oh hooray - an obstacle course!
All-wheel drive...LOL

Does frontline kill worms as well as mites? Also when you say "check the vent for mites" can you tell me how you do this please. I feel like it is a two person job.

Well........I think all the chicks that are going to hatch have done so. I still have the 4 Marans eggs, 3 Mottled AM and 2 OE in there. I candled them and they all look like they developed pretty far and then stopped for some reason. Some I can even see where the look like they filled the egg and pushed up a bit on the aircell, but none have internally pipped and none are moving or making any sound. I will leave them a couple of days more and remove them just to be sure, but I think my final count will be 12 of 33 eggs. Not a very good rate but all were shipped eggs. Now that I have the Brinsea hopefully the rate will go up in the next clutch. I have some from a friends hens in there now on day 8.
So any news?
ETA Pictures Please!!

examine after dark- after 9pm. tip the chicken over and look for little brown to red specks that move around the vent. You can do this by yourself if you have a head lamp.

Frontline does not kill worms. Use one of the wormers that Kathy has in her signature.

hatching update: three are out of their shells (two campines, one swedish cross), and the other three of those types of eggs are all pipping -- but no pips at all on the shipped cream legbar eggs yet. will see if they're just a day or two behind the eggs from my own flock, or if shipping irreparably harmed them again... (they DID seem to be developing when i last candled around day 14, but who knows...)

pictures tomorrow!

Good news on the hatch!

Shipping causes them to use energy to repair the damage. They may just hatch late.

Thanks Ron...I asked my question wrong. All of my birds have been wormed in the last 3 months so I wanted to be sure that if I found mites I wasn't going to be ODing them with a 3rd wormer. I don't have a head lamp so will ask for help.

Poor girls...I imagine what it would be like to be awakened two hours into my sleep to be turned upside down and examined with a flash light. There are indignities that go along with being a chicken.

I have come up with a chicken plan for the spring and summer and fall...I have been all over the place but have decided that the only breeds I will add in bird form are NH and either BBS Ameraucana or PetRocks Splash Langshan/Bresse mixes

After that I will give proven broodies eggs from

Mottled Java from Mickey Clayton in OR
Silver Penciled Wys from Bluegum on BYC
Birchen Marans from our own Lawatt*
Bantam Cochin FRIZZLE from a gal over in Chico*
California Grey from MichaelApple here on BYC*
Non provens get eggs from here Dels and Sex Links and those Silkie/D'Uccle Bantams

*no shipping required

There are oodles of others that I want but I am not going to do it...yet

Oh and did I tell you my mom is getting me a Genesis for my b-day? It is a back up plan for broodies that will be more reliable than the LG. But I might use it to hatch turkeys for the Cinco de Mayo hatchalong...If I can figure out where to house them....hmmm but I have to give them tutors...which may mean tossing a few Del eggs in as well...Oh Dear maybe I will just buy a few poults from Chiqita
