California - Northern

Thank you so much! I live in Sacramento. I'm originally from Pasadena, then moved to Davis to go to UCD. We lived in Citrus Heights (right on the border of Roseville) for a few years, but now we're back in the city. :)

Welcome Welcome! Glad you could join us. What breeds do you have?

Has anyone heard that kiln dried shavings are toxic? i guess the drying process release phenols that are toxic if ingested. Read it on FB. Never had a problem with shavings before, but need to know this stuff. Is this true?

No, just that there is a toxic Cedar from the East Coast. West Coast stuff is fine though.

I get my pine shavings from TSC--No problems ever.

I've never had any problems either. Used them for years. Don't know if chicks eat them, i've never had problems. But when I read that I thought I should check

Wait, she is in Dunsmuir? That would be perfect for shipping. Regional A should be very reasonable for that shipment.

Of course I have relatives in Redding....It might be time for a road trip!
Haha! I love that car! We just bought a huge full size van that seats 15! I have to show this to my husband because my sister calls it the vango and makes fun of me lol

Thank you so much! :)

I'm in Sacramento. :) I'm not 1100% sure yet. I'm pretty sure that chicken math is going to affect my life in a huge way, though. We seem to start with one of something and then it multiplies... like dogs, cats, kids... :P

Right now I kind of have my eyes set on BBS orpingtons, creme legbars, and maybe some plain old EE's. I'd like something that isn't too flighty and is friendly, since I have small children. Any recommendations? :)

Thanks so much!!!
You will get lots of recommendations here. Welcome. We are having a chicken lovers get together here in Turlock on May 18th. You are welcomed to join as everyone here is. You can meet several of the regulars on this board. It's a pot lunch & swimming party. We did it here 2 years ago & had a lot of fun.

They really are so cute. I can't wait to have them walking around my yard. If we didn't have a baby I would probably already have them. Good thing the baby is cute. ;) My husband has been trying to convince me for years to get chickens, and now that I'm on board I think he might be rethinking that idea, haha. I am totally hooked and it's all I can talk about. :)
That's normal behavior for a chicken lover........right?????? You're in good company here..!!!!!

When I first joined BYC, someone posted pics of their chickens swimming with their daughters. I think that the chickens were buff orpingtons. It was adorable! Does anyone else remember seeing this post?

I remember seeing that & took another look on your link just now. I honestly don't think my big butt Buff Orpingtons would have a chance trying to float....LOL
Thank you so much! I don't know if you saw my other post about your chickens, but my kids are obsessed with your orpington video. :) They can't get enough!

Ah yes, I've seen this video. I laughed because I KNOW that this will be me.

We have our actual veggie garden fenced already because of the dogs, but I'm hoping that I can set up enough plants in the chicken garden that they won't tear it up too quickly. We shall see. It's probably a pipe dream, haha. I'll likely let them out into the whole yard (except the veggies) when I'm home and the dogs are inside. I'm excited!
My free loading free rangers nibble at new shoots but them leave them alone & they recover then when they see a ripe tomato they may take a couple of bites. The veggie garden is out back away from the house. The trouble I have is near the house when I plant little 6 packs they scratch the whole little plant up right out of the ground & all my walkways are always littered with dirt they have scratched out of the flower beds.

Wow PetRock, those trays are awesome. I think I'll have to put the kids to work making some!

There will be one or more on the free raffle table at the chicken party in May & starter fodder feeders &sprouting trays. I have enjoyed trying all of them Debi & George introduced me to these troughs at the last party.
Thank you for the info! What are these trays normally used for? Sprouting, or something else? I might also try this for our tortoises!
Thanks for that link!
Debi already told you I see. They are cement (concrete) mixing trays.

Quote: I put that in my favorite places for future reading Deb...Thanks

I need help withy new genesis. I filled the suggested area, which is highlighted in the pic. I got like 55% humidity.
Emptied that, dried it. Then filled that square right in the middle for 30%. Just add some to one of the rectangles next to it, but I'm thinking that may be too high. Any help would be greatly appreciated . Could those with this tell me what they fill up?

I just a little in the tray around the sides every 2 days it varies between 45 down to around 30 % worked good at day 18 I put some in the side again and a small plastic cup and it went to between about 58 and. 65% worked good as almost all the crele penedesenca and empordanesa hatched

Oh and I hucked the clips as they rust and I don't want that bacteria in there after a day or so the mesh sits to the trey anyways
