My Dad taught us how to clip the feathers on one wing growing up too. It is amazing how much is the same and yet things have changed too.
I love being able to put all the things my grandmother (Vava) taught me to do to good use. She was just a poor farm wife in a tie that everyone seemed to bw poor & it didn't matter....What a resource she was.....a wealth of DIY knowledge.

I can send you quail eggs if you want. Or bring some in may. My quail are inside so they are laying. The manchurians have Huge eggs.
I would love that Shantih. Are the fertile for hatching?? I am going to Angel Camp tomorrow to get some quail to just get my son started for eggs.I have not had the Manchurians before only the Jumbo Brown & Texas A & M cotournix for eggs.
I couldn't clean out the tray any more and found that salad plates fit under the mesh nicely! One plate -36-40 % add another 1/2 full -56-60%!!!! I used the ones with chickens on the print ;-)))
Gah maybe I should move them in. They stink! Maybe I should add a light in their window, but we built 14 in headroom
To stop flushing... No space for a lamp. Maybe external light by the window from like 5-8 pm would get them
Laying? Is it also the cold that ales them go on strike? Also last week my feed store was out of 30% and I had to buy 20% breeder... I give shells , bos and spray. Is that ok?
Oh yes they stick. I raised a bunch when I bought hatching eggs on line & they were in my front porch in my brooders......whew.............what a difference when I moved them outside.....LOL
The ones I am getting tomorrow are the Jumbo Brown Cotournix & Shantih is bringing me eggs from her Manchurians to the party in May.......Yeah..!!!
French Black Copper Marans. They lay chocolate eggs. I'm with you on the initials....I have some down now, but still have to try to work thru some. There are sooo many with all these chicken experts here and they raise some really unusual breeds. Hopefully we will catch on quickly!
Oh I soooooooooooooo struggled with the initials when I first started these boards. I kept a notebook of who's who & where they were from for the people & a list of the acronyms for the breeds. I would have to pick them up one at a time til I got a list going. Then some nice member posted a whole list of them. Now after a long vacation from the boards I am seeing new ones to me that I don't know.
FBCM, you now know...BCM Black Copper Marans (Marans always has an "s" at the end, singular or plural) French or clean legged...AM true Ameraucana( not EEs), EE Eater Eggers, OEs Olive Eggers....LS Light Sussex....BBS Blue black splash in any breed that has them.....BO Buff Orpingtons, MJ Mottled Javas....JG Jersey Giants. I think they use FV for Favarolles & DK for Dorkings. , RIR Rhode Island Reds...NH New Hampshires...BR Barred Rocks These are only some of them that come to mind & other members may have different ideas.

A light outside should do it. They like it bright for lounging. I feed both 20 and 28 depending on what ive got. I dont notice a big difference. Once they stop laying it does take a while to get back in the swing of things.
The styrafoam trays all suck imo. The plate is a fablous idea I might try it for my no quail hatches.
For those of you getting into marans intending to sell for pets Pictures!!!! If they are not your eggs get A picture of them in the incubator and save the shells if you can. If they are your eggs blow out the first few of the season that are nice and dark and Blow them out and save them.
You compitition is the hatchery cuckoo marans that are usually so light you cant even call them marans because they dont start as a 4. Unless you are selling to people who care about sop all they will care about is egg color and feathered shanks. If you sell eggs and your chicks get feathers in later because the feathering is light let them know that too.
This talk about egg color brings something to my mind. Do any of you agree that when you keep eggs/eggshells the color changes?? I see the difference in incubated BCM eggs & in shells I have blown out to keep. I would expect them to fade but instead the darker one's color seems to concentrate & get darker as they age & dry out. I think they can change as much as 1 or 2 color #s.
I think that is wonderful! I hope that I have that life when the time comes and my children are grown. Nothing would make me happier. If there's one thing I've learned as a parent it's that it doesn't matter if anything is fancy, as long as there is plenty of love and laughter.
I grew up poor & didn't even know it.....LOL..........I love my life & remind myself if I ever even think of having a pity party that when I was able I did it all....that is, anything I had an interest in doing & stayed active having fun & pursuing projects. My life has been filled with family, friends & projects............... I am blessed.
Thank you! Yes I'm hoping that I catch on with the initials, haha. I spend a lot of time trying to work out what breeds people are talking about. I usually give up, lol.
Hope my rambling above helped some.
