So you had silkies with LF? Now I am all confused.

And what is the business about they aren't supposed to get wet? Do they do a Gremlin thing?

I think like with all Flocks, it depends on the individuals that make up the flock. I moved a Basque hen pullet and a Wheaten Penedesenca into the layer flock last night and and all is well. I did let the two new ones bond in a pen with the Pita Pintas so the will hang out together. It also helps that the Basque is a big girl.

You may well be able to get two silkies to integrate with your Big girls. It wold depend on the flock.

She is about 220g. 3-4 months old. This is a crappy picture.
See how much smaller then anyone else?
Wow! is she the little blue one? What sort of special needs would she have and I don't know if you saw the bottom of the page post but No I don't have a bantam coop at this time. With working and a couple of trips coming up I probably shouldn't commit to caring for a frail bird. I have not bantams at all at this point and to be that little and friendless would be sad. Of course I could bring her in my carry on.

All the Silkies that I've had roost in the coop with the other hens. They are a little ditzy though. I had to put them in the coop at night a lot, and they ran into things sometimes. It might be all the head fluff, blocking their vision? I loved mine though. I got rid of them because I was tired of dealing with their broodiness ALL THE TIME. They were using Silkie Peer Pressure, to convince the other hens to go broody with them. I do have a whole bunch of Silkie chicks again though. I really do like them.

Maybe mine are especially dumb?

No I don't, would I need a designated coop for a  silkie?  What are this little ones special needs?  I am interested but I work and we have a couple of trips planned so I hesitat

This is very very funny.  I had a Red Star who attempted to go broody last summer.  She didn't get the memo either.

If The Keeper is set up for it, it would probably be a better fit right now

This is a wonderful group of supportive people.  I am so sorry you had to do that but grateful you shared with us so we could all learn.

I am sorry Nikki.  I had one like that top pic under a broody.  I think when mama had to get up to chase after a wild little hatchling it cooled off and died in the shell like yours.  Heartbreaking.

Yes it would.   Do you all find yourself looking at structures everywhere you go and sizing them up as potential coops?  I do it all the time!

Was at the bottom of my feed sack so took it out and left the  empty bin open all night.  This morning There were about a half dozen mice in there. (((((((shudder)))))) I am not a fan so I took the whole bin into the run and tipped it on its side.   My Dorking cross and one of my pure Dorks each scored one.   All that ancestral time around English farm houses taught them to be mousers.  It reminded me of when I putt crickets in the brooder when they were little.

Ok do showgirls freak you out? They sound like a better fit for you they are fiestier and still broody.

The silkie I bought at stockton seems to have a neuro problem. She has trouble aiming at food like she is a badly recovered wry neck . She can't aim in the right place. She is very thin. She got stuck in the mud a few days ago and I had to unstuck her and wash her and noticed how thin she was. I have been tubing her once a day to try and plump her up. Im not sure if I wont need to find her a pet home too.

Yes!  I drive my family crazy with it!  I'm always emailing my DH stuff I find on craigslist!  One time someone in Alameda was giving away 3 glass display cases.  I wanted them so badly to use for brooders!  DH was not interested.  I don't know why?!:gig

Mario never responds to the cl stuff I send him unless I push it and call him. He can usually leave work without it being an issue and he has the suv. But he dosnt like being dragged around.

So kathy where do we get ahold of baytril this miracle drug? Im intrigued.

I have a chick from my last hatch that doesn't seem to be growing. He/she is a mini-Langshan with giant feathers on his wings and a downy body. He is less than half the size of his hatchmates but was the same size at hatch. He is eating but not growing and spends lots of time sleeping. He is lethargic unless I'm trying to catch him. I'm wondering if he has some internal problems or if it is just failure to thrive.

one of my silver campine chicks that hatched last fall did that, she was the only pullet and by about 12 weeks of age she was literally half the size of her hatchmate brothers -- she eventually passed away, i can't remember the exact age. she was very sweet, not quite lethargic but just a bit more mellow than the other campines -- i was sorry that she died, although she clearly had something not working right developmentally...

I should start by saying that Baytril (Enrofloxacin) is one of the drugs that banned for use in food animals. It's pretty easy to get, just do a search for "baytril for birds". I'm hesitant about posting links, 'cause the links tend to disappear... Maybe I'm just paranoid, lol.

It's a great drug and the easiest one to give, IMO, but it should be used cautiously. If you have a vet you can talk to, call them and talk about it.

Good info here about it:

One of my HRIRs seems to have Narcoleps, but she is a big girl!

I have had a couple that had failure to thrive. They did not make past 10 weeks.

I have five seven out now. I checked BYC and two more hatched! An OE is zipping.
