The dot is actually a g. He is the smallest rooster I have ever seen, not quite sure how it happened, but it did, lol. He has a sister, but she's quite a bit bigger. FYI, these were random eggs that a hen hatched, the other six from the same clutch are much bigger.

Thank you for clearing that up. I'm so happy I win the debate

Still boggles the mind to have a 9 ounce rooster.

You're welcome and glad you one the debate! I weighed his sister and she's about 300 grams, so not as heavy as I thought.

Quote: It is about 3.5x5. Keep in mind that it will house for breeding only The hens once I collect so many fertilized eggs will go back in the 15x22. It will keep 1 rooster in it and I will put it in a fenced are so I can let the roos out during the day. Will have shade cloth over to deter hawks. The roos are now in a 8x8 and some in with the hens. The nest boxes are external and 3 boxes. I am getting a new brooder and will use my home made one for another breeding area. It is part of the main chicken barn. And the pen is adjustable. There is no foraging past spring. Our heat in Lake county where we live is killer :/ I give the weeds and grass clippings plus all my scraps. 100% organic too.

Our big coop is made mostly with repurposed parts. The frame of the run is a big pipe swing set that DH put together for the kids. Most of the wood we used on the coop was left over set pieces from a homeschool theater group that we ran for 7 years. We used siding on the outside that was given to us by DH's former boss. We had to buy a few 2 x 4's and the hardware. Of course, it looks like a coop built with misc salvaged materials. I think that I need to paint it and fix a few parts that don't look very good. Last year we built a double decker quail pen that I intend to use for chicks once the quail are gone. It doesn't look too bad and definitely an improvement over our coop. The coop that we are currently building is our best yet! We painted it yesterday and put lino on the floor. I kept looking at our old coop yesterday and thinking about how to spruce it up! The chickens like it fine and it is functional but not cute!

Let me know next time you have one of those luncheons! We would like to come if it works out for us!

I would love to have you come.

I have the same problem with my recycled junk projects. I love repurposing materials but hate to have a hodge podge shanty town look when they are done. I made some small coops out of fruit bins but painted them & put white scalloped trip on them to try to make them look decent......LOL

No I don't, would I need a designated coop for a silkie? What are this little ones special needs? I am interested but I work and we have a couple of trips planned so I hesitat

This is very very funny. I had a Red Star who attempted to go broody last summer. She didn't get the memo either.

If The Keeper is set up for it, it would probably be a better fit right now

This is a wonderful group of supportive people. I am so sorry you had to do that but grateful you shared with us so we could all learn.

I am sorry Nikki. I had one like that top pic under a broody. I think when mama had to get up to chase after a wild little hatchling it cooled off and died in the shell like yours. Heartbreaking.

Yes it would. Do you all find yourself looking at structures everywhere you go and sizing them up as potential coops? I do it all the time!

Was at the bottom of my feed sack so took it out and left the empty bin open all night. This morning There were about a half dozen mice in there. (((((((shudder)))))) I am not a fan so I took the whole bin into the run and tipped it on its side. My Dorking cross and one of my pure Dorks each scored one. All that ancestral time around English farm houses taught them to be mousers. It reminded me of when I putt crickets in the brooder when they were little.
I have a "chicken lovin" friend that tells me her chickens are great mousers. I never see mice out there so maybe mine are too & I just don't know it. I certainly get my share in the house & am always fighting them off. I wouldn't trade country living though......................

Yes! I drive my family crazy with it! I'm always emailing my DH stuff I find on craigslist! One time someone in Alameda was giving away 3 glass display cases. I wanted them so badly to use for brooders! DH was not interested. I don't know why?!

I have a friend that buys unclaimed storage units & he is always coming up with stuff that tempts me.........LOL

One of my HRIRs seems to have Narcoleps, but she is a big girl!

I have had a couple that had failure to thrive. They did not make past 10 weeks.

I have five seven out now. I checked BYC and two more hatched! An OE is zipping.
You go, go, go..........You are such a good hatcher
Very cute... I'm jealous, all you guys and gals have fancy purebred chickens and chicks, all I ever have are mutts!

There are people on this board that will gladly help you fix that situation. Are you coming to the party in May? You are welcomed to eggs from breeds I have.

I love that!

And lamb from hair sheep breeds tastes totally different from wool sheep lamb. Hair sheep are only raised for meat, so the meat quality has always been a priority in selection - hence better tasting lamb from hair sheep. The extra lanolin in wool breeds also affects the flavor, making it have that unique taste of lamb that makes so many people not like lamb. Hair sheep lamb almost tastes like mild beef. Even if you have never liked lamb, it's worth it to try locally produced lamb from hair sheep - just to taste the difference. It's the only lamb that I like.
Ron, I didn't tell you that it's best if it's a little rare. My son overcooked his and didn't like it. I like using lemon, lemon pepper, garlic & wine.
I was hoping that you would enjoy it.
I like lamb & my husband is looking for something to raise in our pasture. I am not familiar with the Hair sheep yet. We have about 4 acres of permanent pasture that we have kept polled Herefords on for years & are ready for a change.

It never stops sucking but it does get easier.
So says the silkie under my window.
Seremas are Fiesty little things. When Snickerdaddy Bites he holds on! Goes for the feet.

Lol! I love the crazyness of my Serama Roos! I had my new white ATTACK my hand and the new waterer! He's crazy! But I think it's cute! If a full size Roo was like him I'd be SCARED! And would NOT KEEP HIM!

That is actually why so many toy breed dogs are so horrible to be around--if our boxer acted like some people's tiny dogs, she would've been long gone! (She's a combo of a puppy, a cat, and a stuffed animal

) (Oh, and a chicken pooper scooper

)

Does anyone know a local breeder who goes by SeramaMama?
I bought a silkie serama pullet from years ago from the chicken show in Stockton.
I'd be interested to see what she had currently.
Thanks.

DD used to afraid of a dutch bantam too we re-homed, she always had he handle him in and out of the cage at fair. I had had enough of it and when we got home from fair I made her go in and catch him. He came at her full force, she grabbed him up and started giggling at him. I compared it to battling a moth and she agreed, his spurs were curved so he really couldn't do any damage except whacking you with them.
