I don't think I would be able to drive again for a while if I ever hit a horse......I think it has been 2 weeks now but I had one of the local cab drivers come into work in a van, he usually drives a car. He had just hit and killed a black horse that got loose and ran right in front of him. Police told him he was lucky he didn't end up with the horse in the front seat. He told me he wasn't feeling very lucky.
Welcome back! Glad you DH is soing well!Hi everybody!
It's been a long time since I posted anything - hope everybody's doing well.
Things have been a bit rocky here, but DH is finally done with chemo and doing well, so maybe things can get back to normal-ish.
And I'm looking for some white call ducklings - do you guys know of anyone nearby who has some for sale?
Big day for us here at the farm!
Aside from normal 4 kids chaos, we tried cleaning out the play house aka broody house. It's mostly done.
Started the wheat grass.
Started the BOSS to soaking.
Met Karen @sewandgrow when she brought over a brand new incubator to try! WOW! Thank you so much - we shall have fun with thisNot sure if I trust the new parts yet for the kaput incubator. Will probably run it for a day. Unplug it, run it again and do that for a few days to make sure it stays stable.![]()
Had a young family come buy 8 chicks. It's always so fun to have families over - the littles love the chicks!
Went to candle the eggs from the kaput incubator. When I found the bator it had spiked to 104.5. Unplugged it to cool off and plugged it back in, only to have it spike to 108Of course it was very full of eggs. A friend said that he had room in his bator so I took them over. During candling I discovered that one of my EE's is avoiding the roosters or is infertile (is that possible?) as the same colored blue eggs were all blanks. Anyone want to guess how many of the eggs died? Well, included the 4 bulbs, I removed a total of 10 eggs from 50.
Super happy and thankful that my friend let me put the eggs in his bator. So many chicks saved!![]()
Just to see if the heater would turn off, I plugged in the bator and it got to 114 before I unplugged it.
BIG EVENT. My son fell in love. He's 14 so this is funny. He saw MF D'uccles for the first time. He's cracking me up. He totally wants them! I've always liked LF and dual purpose birds so the concept of bantams escapes me. But I want him involved so it looks like we'll be learning about![]()
useless(now don't get all wound up!) ornamental chickens.
Came home and enjoyed the incredible sunset. Fed the children. Doing chicken chores discovered the MFL cockerel had eloped with one of the pullets.Did I mention USELESS chickens?![]()
Either that or we had a theft. No sign of predators. My son is pretty sure a human was responsible for tearing back all the bird netting but I don't know. Hopefully tomorrow they come back. We went with flashlights and hunted but this is a big area with lots of trees.
For some reason Google chrome isn't working and I can't access my emails. The internet is having severe difficulties and I can't access FB (kind of important as I have customers!) and BYC will barely load. We are talking a minute to go from one page to the next.Thank goodness my husband is coming home tomorrow!![]()
Like I said. A big day, we shall see what tomorrow brings![]()
This looks very promising!!!
Nice Work!
ok, my 20-egg capacity incubator is now officially overloaded: 12 eggs that should be hatching next monday/tuesday, and then added 17 shipped isbar eggs, will see how they do... figuring the 12 no longer need to be turned, since today is day 18, and the shipped ones might benefit from sitting still for their first few days. wish me luck!

It's the same with finches...expecialy Gouldians. LOts of people keep them in a very narrow temperature range, give the anitibiotics or other meds at the firt sign of any issue (some are on them all the time) and foster the eggs to Society finches as a standard practice. I do none of the above and have good strong stock that winter outside with no problems. If I lose 1 or 2 over the winter I assume they were not strong enough to improve the quality of my stock. I really don't think we do them any favors by interfering too much. As you said, it's tough n the beginning because you may lose a lot, but what you end up with a few years down the road is definitley a much better quality line.

Muscovies are definitley NOT cute. I could never bring myself to own them for that reason..
That's fantastic!!!!Day 7 results; 6 clears, 1 blood ring, 1 early quitter, 2 have veins but couldn't find embryo, 1 of them did move though. 18 Dancing embryos and 2 more with veins that I think are developing but I couldn't confirm movement. 66% on shipped eggs is good for me.![]()
We have the Craigs' List Nazi up here. You are not supposed to "sell" animals per thier rules, but people list them with a "rehoming fee" all the time (yeah......$350 for your pit bull puppies is just a rehoming fee). A few times when I had extra canaries I would list them and someone would report them within a day or two and the post would get removed. I never understood the "no animals for sale" thng on CL anyway. We rarely have any good stuff on the Chico list.I am SOOO ticked off!
I posted an ad on craigslist for my birds for sale. With pics that are mine.
Then I notice someone copies my title and puts a "RE:" in front of it. And claims the birds in the pics aren't mine in her post.
I politely responded telling the person that these ARE my birds. No response, but the ad showed up again. You won't find these pics anywhere else but in my profiles. And I did watermark it.
I took those pictures myself. I contacted craigslist and it seems for now, the ad is down. It looked like it was down before and up again, so I don't know how this goes.
I may have to post pics of my son with my birds showing ownership, I shouldn't have to.
I'm taking down of this site all my pics and re-posting with watermarks.
Quote: Yeah for Friday!!!!!
Quote: I have never shipped or recieved poulty by mail (except about 26 years ago with chicks), but have received shipped finches many times. Out of about 20 shipments I only had issues with 1. I shipped to others twice and was a nervous wreck the whole time...much more so than when they were coming to me....
How awesome! Good karma for you.here is my newest addition. She apparently is off site from the woman I am getting her from. She has 4 eggs and they are on about day 12, 13,...the woman wasn't sure the exact day she started sitting on them. Anyway I asked her to keep me posted on their progress so she sent me this today.I am hoping that she is about to tuck the eggs under her or that she is just getting back from eating and drinking

.sulfadimethoxideTylan? Or the d one?
It's the same with finches...expecialy Gouldians. Lots of people keep them in a very narrow temperature range, give the antibiotics or other melds at the first sign of any issue (some are on them all the time) and foster the eggs to Society finches as a standard practice. I do none of the above and have good strong stock that winter outside with no problems. If I lose 1 or 2 over the winter I assume they were not strong enough to improve the quality of my stock.
What kind of finches do you raise? I have 2 pair of society and always wanted some spice finches.
Quote: Well...that makes sense, but I think the number of ads by a poster would be a good indicator. The "Rehoming Fee" was specifically listed as OK, but the amounts people were listing for that was ridiculous. I think it said it was OK to ask to recover amounts spent to rehome to animal...( gas money, grooming, vaccines, etc).. It still says "pets (no animal sales or breeding -- rehoming with small adoption fee is ok --)" . I would not have had a problem with it if it were uniformly enforced, but I would see tons of ads for pets being sold in other areas of the country, but not in Chico. I do see them now and people are not even bothering to say it's a rehoming fee. I just looked at one for cockatiels and they just said "asking $75". I use Ebay classifieds now since they don't have any rules about that. Most of the time I don't even think about Craig's List anymore.
