California - Northern

Thank you for the condolences! And thanks for the info, Kathy! I'm in the process of filling out the form. What should I ask them to test for?

Anyone know who raises bantam RIR and bantam Welsummers. I am not into bantams & have an older gent calling asking for them. He has been retired twice & now wants to play.....................
See if you can find some of Bob Blosl's old line some where. They went to a couple of people and if you can get someone that knows how to pack eggs to send you, they would be amazing to have!

I usually just include the symptoms, how i found the body, medications used, etc. I also include flock history that includes previously diagnosed problems. They're much smarter than I am, so I don't ask for any specific testing. :D

I lost one of my 1 yr old Cream Legbar hens yesterday.

She looked fine in the morning and then about mid-day I saw her in the corner of the coop. I thought that she was in line for a nest box. (I have a crazy CL mix broody in one box who is very protective and the other chickens won't go near her.) She looked zoned out like they do sometimes when they lay an egg but when I touched her she didn't run away like she normally would. I checked on her a little while later and she was in a nest box but not very responsive. So, I prepared a place in a container in the garage for her. (Space is limited with the chicks that I've hatched in the past 2 weeks.) When I went out to get her, she had passed away in the nest box. She had some yellow/white discharge below her vent but, before death had no nasal discharge, breathing problems, etc. I have to admit that I cried and I was not even that attached to her. I didn't even cry when we lost our first chicken a few months ago. It was just a bad day yesterday with all kinds of little things going wrong. Her death was just the culmination of my bad day. She is bagged, in the frig, and will be headed to Davis later this morning. Would someone please tell me how to do the postage? The last time I sent a bird in, Cheryl did the postage for me.

That is sad!

Cancer is usually different and is at two years old. It is good that you are shipping her! Then you will know.

They always test for salmonella and e coli. The other tests are to determine the cause of death and it varies based on the bird. They will grow cultures for example if the suspected bacteria.

They do also check for worms and other parasites too.

i have birchen marans, black with silver at the neck -- beautiful birds, and their eggs are pretty dark, although i understand that BCMs are usually the darkest... here's a photo:

What a nice basket! Love the color range. Who laid the 2nd one in from the left on the top row (pinkish/purplish)?

Edited to add - Never mind, already asked & answered earlier, Thanks! The Araucana's egg is a beauty too.

Just had a thought... Please don't think I'm being insensitive, 'cause that's not the type of person I am, but you might want to very gently do a cloacal exam and see if you can feel anything. I usually do this when they're alive and have learned how to detect internal laying, cancer, EYP, ascites and *possibly* fatty liver disease.

Wear a glove of course and do it gently if you decide to.

from left two right, back row is: white = silver campine, purple = first pullet egg from one of the marans (i've not seen any more purple since), olive = isbar/marans cross, dark brown = birchen marans; front row is: light green = amelia (CL x penedesenca), although her sister lays a darker green egg, cream = silver penciled plymouth rock, turquoise = araucana

and thanks! soon there will also be isbars & CLs laying...
great egg colors. Too bad about no more purple. I may achieve the dark olive with this batch of 2nd generation OEs. The original cross was B/B AMs ove Blue Copper hens & I have nice lighter olive eggs. Now those pullets are being covered my BCM roosters so we will see..................What fun.

I am so sorry Debi..............You put so much into your birds. It's no wonder you cry at the loss of one.
