They need 2 weeks minimum for the vacc to take hold. As to when it goes away.. it won't.

The vaccine is helpful but isn't 100% effective in preventing symptoms, correct?
I know it won't go away, but introducing new birds so quickly has me wondering. But I guess if it's there, it's there and time won't change things.

The vaccine protects against mareks Cancer when they are two years old.

I think I asked this before but I am going to ask again, does anyone know of any Orpington breeders in Sonoma County? That sells sexed chicks? I sadly can't take the risk of a roo where I live so can't buy straight run chick or hatching eggs.

Yes sexed is your problem. Vent sexers make over 100k a year last I looked due to how hard it is to do well and the brutal nature of the job. Juststruttin has a video on what happens to the boys too on her wrbsite :(.

If you want 90% accuracy (thats what they get) you will have to go with hatchery chicks. If you want big beautiful orphs you can either try and buy girls that didnt make it into the breeding program (juststruttin has some of these or did) or get straiggt run and rehome. Even when they are a month old and we are guessing I think we only get 70% there are a lot of chickens that take a while to display hen or roo.

If they have that 3 weeks it is a good% that are immune. But most don't have it. If she is someone you know and are willing to recomend things too tell her not to get any recent imports. Our maraks is wiping a lot of the english orphs beibs and cream legbars out. And isbars etc. Stick with American breeds from someone who does not vacc the parent flock.

The Spanish breeds from Megan are resistant too. The Basque and Pita Pintas have had no trouble with anything yet.

Thats true! I have not heard it about the sfh either. And I know the bresse shrug it off.

So it is so far the show chickens? And the beibs. But they are dying out in droves so it is also something else id imagine.

I was on my way to the inc room with the consideration of unplugging the bator tonight or tomorrow. 5 pips! My calendar marking was off by a day and (set after lunch) and maybe my temps were low after being too high last time…. Change of plans for the day- make tea and stare at the bator every five minutes with flashlight in hand. I should make a lanyard to hang that thing around my neck! Plus this way I can snuggle the Pita pints and faverolles! Ah I am a crazy chicken lady, I can deny it no longer :~)

Just saying hi and enjoying some of your pictures. I'm in Norcal, too (a little north of Sacramento).
Welcome to our fast moving friendly "smart" thread.................LOL. Come join many of us at the party in May in Turlock. You will be able to meet a lot of us. learn a lot & just have fun with your new Chicken Lovin' friends & their families.

Some broody cuteness. She sat in the nest boxes and tried to steal eggs for nearly 35 days, so I gave her the latest batch of chicks from the bator.

She certainly deserves some babies after sticking it out that long. She looks like a very happy camper!

DD found the cable for her camera, the triplets.

Adorable!

The 2 chicks are so happy to get new friends!! Thanks @PetRock

The little one in front is one of the originals. A Legbar cross.

The more the merrier! They all look like great buddies already.

Well the biggie babies are outside now I locked them in overnight last night but they have gotten the idea and now are spending most of their time inside and were all in by dark. I can tell this little coop is not going to be big enough for all 6 and barely big enough for the 4. I really need to get cracking on the new coop and run I probably have about 5 weeks before the BO are this big.

Does anyone know if the BO grow slower than Delawares. They appear to be slightly behind in development pace. And the Delawares seem to have grown overnight just by being outside.

Its amazing how much they change week by week.

The color patterns seem to change day by day too. I'll post some pics soon again maybe someone can help me figure out if I have 1 or more Roo's Im wondering If I should pick up a couple more BO this week just in case. I think they could fit with 2 bitty babies as they will only be a week and a half. More Delawares arent available for a number of weeks.

I'm going to get my brother in law to help me build a garage brooder. My wife wants to raise the chicks for her brothers to have at their homes in a couple months.
I need to get my meat bords outside too. I have put them out for the day a couple of times, but they are lazy things and don;t seem to appreciate being out as much at the others ones do, but it's just too dark in the garage to keep them there another 5 weeks until processing time. I have not been able to find fruit bin to convert to a brooder, but did order a pen from Costco that should be here this week.

My son has his way with the wee ones. The ducklings literally flock to him. Happened 2 years ago too.

I can just hear them saying "MOMMY!!!". Must be the blonde hair. If you don't mind me asking, how old is he?

Woo Hoo!!!! I bet you are very glad you waited! What day did you think they were on?

WOW! I just candled the 41 Runner Duck eggs I set for the Easter HAL and 40 of them are developing!!!! There is also growth in about 9 of the 12 meat bird eggs and some of the guinea eggs AND...there are 3 hatchlings under the broody hen this morning. 6 More eggs to go under her. She is a first time broody FBC Marans.
