I am so sad....had the worst hatch ever. Out of 14 shipped eggs only had 6 make it to lockdown and only one hatched. All the others were dead inside the eggs fully formed including 3 from my own flock. I didn't do anything different than my previous incubation and had great results last time. It really sucked. Ok done complaining now. At least I got 2!

Soo sorry, Liz.

. I hate when that happens. I always feel like it would be better if they never even developed or were early quiters.

It's so much harder when the make it that far and then don't hatch.

This chick trilled it's way out . I've never heard such a ferocious little noise before!

@chiqita what are the honkin big cream eggs in there? lol.

Bresse.

Yes, from what I have read, it save a couple of percent from cancer.

I would consider using the vaccine if I had a susceptible breed though.

The kicker is getting the vacc established before expousure. It is very very hard to do. Because most hens have been exposed so you carry it around with you and most chicken people can't bio securiry dust. Plus people do it later and think it does not matter. When I talked to davis she said getting out in front of it was terrible and it was much more effective in the egg. Now just teach me how to do that heh.

I watched a video on commercial hatching where the did mareks vaccine in the shell. On day 18, before they moved the eggs into the hatcher, a machine popped a needle into the big end of the egg, injected the vaccine and then sealed the egg. The video did not say what was used to seal the egg but it likely was some type of wax.

Sorry for the bad Hatch!

It is nice to have two. They do like company.

I think this would be the ideal method! Again, I'm no expert, but Nambroth and Seminolewind have commented that there are a few different types of the vaccine available to hatcheries, but backyarders like us can only get one of them (don't quote me on that, 'cause I may have misunderstood what they were saying :D).

I think I asked this before but I am going to ask again, does anyone know of any Orpington breeders in Sonoma County? That sells sexed chicks? I sadly can't take the risk of a roo where I live so can't buy straight run chick or hatching eggs.
I am in Lake county but I can't sex them until about a month in age.

Close to 300 posts behind...not even going to try to catch up but wanted to give a Easter HAL candling report. On Day 8 every one of the bantam eggs under Petunia...8 were fine and not only were they not gooded by the broken egg debacle they also all had moving babies growing inside. Of the 10 LF eggs under Norma 2 were clear the other 8 had super veining and movement. They are all white eggs under her so it is really easy to see inside.
