Scrolling Craigslist ads (Chico is the city closest to me) and I keep thinking "Hmmm, I wonder if these are BYC birds."

Chico is the one I use too. Usually not much on there....

Being new to this. I will say that the  Delawares are much more confident and adventurous birds compared to the Buff Orps. But the Orps seem to be more interested in "hanging" with the human family. With now 2 week feather growth they fly to the top of their box when they hear us in the room but are not interested in escaping just want to be included. They hop onto hands and arms offered them to come out and "play" and actually seem interested in being with members of the family. They sit on and arm or hand and just stay there where the delawares were more apt to move on after perching for a minute. The BO's are very sweet. The biggie babies outside are ok being held, though they would rather go exploring if they had their way. It is a fun adventure so far.

Delawares were one of the first breeds I actually chose (vs the box o chicks from the feedstore my hubby & Dad first surprised me with :). They have remained one of my absolute favorite breeds due to their personalities as well as their dual purpose traits. My first girls were the nosiest birds I've ever owned, they were into everything. They were a lot of fun. I'm glad you are all enjoying them. It will be fun to see how they progress. I've got 6 Dellie chicks of my own that hatched last week. I love this time of year :)

I grew up in the Cambrian Park area of San Jose. Went to Cambrian Elementary (now condos from what I understand...) Dartmouth and Blackford Jr High and Branham High School.
I grew up in Cambrian Park, behind the Plaza Shopping Center. I lived on the corner of Wyrick and Berry. I went to Oster Elem, then Dartmouth, then they changed the lines so I went to Union in 8th grade. I then went to Camden High School, which has been closed since 1980.

I still have old spirit badges to beat your school during sporting events.

How odd, I've met people from SJ plenty of times, but never from the same neighborhood! My best friend lived on New Jersey, right off Camden.

I was probably there before you though, I graduated HS in '71.

I grew up off the the east end of Story Road. Before the neighbor hood trees grew in we could see Lick observatory from our front window. I went to James Lick High. Spent many a time in Alum Rock Park. Drove up Mt Hamilton Road many many times.

Most of you have probably already read this story as it has been passed virally via email. However, I thought I would share it in case some of you have not seen it.

********

Fred was in the fertilized egg business. He had several hundred young ' pullets ,' and ten roosters to fertilize the eggs.

He kept records, and any rooster not performing went into the soup pot and was replaced.

This took a lot of time, so he bought some tiny bells and attached them to his roosters.

Each bell had a different tone, so he could tell from a distance, which rooster was performing.

Now, he could sit on the porch and fill out an efficiency report by just listening to the bells.

Fred 's favorite rooster, old Butch , was a very fine specimen, but this morning he noticed old Butch 's bell hadn't rung at all!

When he went to investigate, he saw the other roosters were busy chasing pullets , bells-a-ringing, but the pullets , hearing the roosters coming, would run for cover.

To Fred 's amazement, old Butch had his bell in his beak, so it couldn't ring.

He'd sneak up on a pullet , do his job and walk on to the next one.

Fred was so proud of old Butch , he entered him in the Brisbane City Show and he became an overnight sensation among the judges.

The result was the judges not only awarded old Butch the "No Bell Piece Prize," but they also awarded him the " Pulletsurprise " as well.

Clearly old Butch was a politician in the making. Who else but a politician could figure out how to win two of the most coveted awards on our planet by being the best at sneaking up on the unsuspecting populace and screwing them when they weren't paying attention.

Vote carefully in the next election, you can’t always hear the bells.

I can't remember where I first read this Deann. I think a "chicken lovin" friend e mailed it to be. I got such a kick out of it I read it out loud to someone else.
Mine seem to like the roosts I have too...just need more of them once I get a bigger space.

The info I got with the eggs and the incubator said 23-24 days for the Bob Whites. The chicken eggs were set last Sunday evening and the quail eggs were just set today so the chickens shouls be out first. They will be moved to the Farm Innovator for hatch. It is the first time for me, so I can hardly wait to see them!

Good luck....such fun......you are in for an adventure.

Hello everyone! I hail from the Bay Area. I'm just starting out - getting things ready to build our coop/run and we'll be getting peepers in May!

I've already learned so much from this thread - it moves FAST. Looking forward to learning more :)
Welcome to this thread. I think we have talked on another board. Our soil here in Turlock is very sandy too. When we lived in Alameda it was directly across the street from the Shoreline beach.

The Delawares captured my heart as chicks the first time I hatched eggs from the breeding group I bought from @Lotsapaints . They were so fearless & curious always rushing the brooder door to greet me........LOL. I have a group of eggs from @fortyfivefarm in the incubator now due to hatch on the 15th. My rooster got killed & we drove to @capayvalleychick in Guinda to pick up a new rooster so I will be breeding again soon.

So glad to see you up and with the living again. Can't wait for another play day now that you will have wheels again. @Countrychickatheart is going to add you to our 3 way PM conversations so you can keep up with our social doings.....LOL

I have 3 incubators full and one is setup for hatching. I will begin hatching Bresse soon and Pinta Pitas after that.

I hope you get some Plums\pluots this year!
When I quickly skimmed your post and saw Pluots and thought it was a Pinta crossed with ?. Then when I saw plums written next to it I figured it out. Sorry, its still early.

I lent 3 of my 4 incubators out so no chicks for me. I figured it is better to get the incubators out of the house otherwise eggs mysteriously start hatching from them.
