California - Northern

I want a broody hen!  There are two breeds that I love, for their looks alone. I don't want to add to the breeds that I have, but I've been wondering if I could find a reliable broody hen in one of the breeds that I covet. That way, I could have a pretty chicken that has a purpose.

So... do Sumatras or frizzled bantam Cochins go broody??? Anyone have a broody one for sale? Can Sumatras be kept in a mixed flock or are they game?

I accidentally bought a bag of Pigeon Grit. It's not the same as chicken grit, it's more of a supplement with calcium etc. Anybody want it?

I've had Sumatras for several years now and I have found it to be case by case with them going broody. I have one hen that goes at least 2-3 times a year & others that have never even thought about it. That's with the LF. I haven't had the bantams as long so I don't know yet how they take to being broody.

I had the Cochins, large & small - smooth & frizzled, they ALL go broody :). Even had a rooster who occasionally sat on the nest! Lol

Where do I find a breeder? Any in Nor Cal? Should I ask on FB?
http://www.norcalchickens.com/ is where I was planning to get hatching eggs. Here is her blurb on her bantam page:

Cochins, Silkies, and Sizzles (Cochin Silkie crosses) make excellent pets, and a good choice for kids.
ROOSTERS: in my flock are 1 Silver Penciled, 1 Birchen, & 1 Partridge Purebred Cochins.
HENS: Silver Penciled, Birchen, Partridge, White, Black Frizzle Cochins.
Blue Silkie, Splash,Wheaten, Dark Blue Smooth Sizzles, Black Frizzle Sizzle.

So she has pure boys and a mixed group of girls. If you get eggs you should be able to specify that you only want cochin

I made a friend at the elverta feeds store

Good call!

Hey is it true that my Silkie over D'Uccle babies will be sex linked? I hear that the boys will have black skin and the girls will have light. Obviously this excited me.

ET correct spelling...

I never heard this one, of course that does not mean it isn't true. But I've never heard of skin color being sex-linked. Have you checked the color calculator? It really only deals with feather coloring, but it may give you some information.

this little girl is rather fuzzy for being a first day hatch. I don't know who th daddy is or the momma for that fact.

I could be a serama, D'Uccle, silkie, bantam Cochin mix. Maybe next time I will mark the eggs. When can you tell which breed they are?

If you can't tell at hatch, then usually by the time they start to feather. Sometimes, never.
