Heard back from UC Davis on the Bresse pullet:
a Fractured, very soft shell egg. Egg yolk peritonitis.
I had them on layer mixed with organic chick start. Switched to just layer about a week before this happened.
They are getting better, but still getting soft shells from these and my older hatchery hens.
They also get oyster shells.
No problems with soft shells with my Marans hens. they actually eat the oyster shell. the others don't go through it as fast.
Good that it's not contagious, bad that I lost a hen to something so stupid.

You can boost calcium by adding a 1/2 of food grade DE to their feed. Give it to them for several days or until the eggs firm up.

It is good that she did not die of something contagious.

Yes glad it was egg issues.

How many lumens should a flashlight have to be good for candling Marans eggs?

To see chick/no chick clear eggs and air cells 400+ to see late veining 1500+

It's good to know what caused it and it sounds like you are already taking measures. Remember that they need adequate amounts of D3 to absorb the calcium though.

Yes and one source I read said to give them Calf Manna. There are instructions on the bag for poultry. You can mix it into the feed or give it to them as scratch.
