California - Northern

I use zip ties on mine and with a decent pair of cutters they're easy to cut off. Used to use spirals, but they come off and could be eaten, lol.

Scissors or those sharp nail little scissors.

If you put the end through the hole a certain way, it locks. The other way, it will keep sliding. Try it and you will see. Difficult to explain.

They might peck a time or two, but they are fine with them. All my chicks have them at first and it has not been a problem. It's very important to check tightness at least once a week, maybe even more.
I'll have to try that. I didn't know they could lock. That was one of my worries.

They snap off by pulling them apart. I do like they zip ties best so far.

They sell numbered zip ties. I will check with cutler.
great idea!
Thank you all for the info on zip ties. I will go that route. I bought a toe punch, but never used it. I just thought "what if I do it wrong and they bleed everywhere". Then when I found the nerve, I lost the punch.

Thanks, that's good to know! What type have you used?

I use ones I bought through Cutler. They are plain aluminum & each one numbered. You order them in groups with the series of numbers you want. You need to buy the pliers you apply them with but they are not expensive & last forever. They fold over & clip over at the end. The end that clips over has a point that slips right through the thin triangle of skin at the top of the wing where it attaches to the body. They don't even notice when you put it on. Holding them is probably more traumatic for them than putting the clip on unless you have birds that are pets & used to being caught & held.

I heard frontline works for mites and lice. I am assuming a few drops from the small dog breed one as it comes in different strengths. anyone use this?
yes I get bigger size since it is cheaper pet drop. It is not different strength just amounts

I don't count a hen broody unless she sits fir 3-4 days. If she only gets up once a day tucks eggs under her and has stopped laying she is likely to be committed.

I don't have gambles but do a quick check to see if you need permits for them. I think you do. California is not keen on people keeping new world quail.

I bought a spray bottle of frontline. I give them two squirts for big ones and one for small ones. It is much easier to use than the drops.

I would be interested in this if you find out how.  I have a GQ 1550 hatcher that I use as an incubator for the first 18 days and then I set the eggs for hatch in my Hovabator Genesis.  I put the eggs in the green plastic egg trays and turn them by first propping up one end of the tray, then laying it flat, and then propping up the other end of the tray.  I also rotate the tray 1/4 turn once a day.  I would love to retrofit it with an automatic turner.

Most people put bought turners for hovabators and such in the hatchers to turn. Ivthink that would cost more then 170 so the other might be better.

That's what I had planned on doing but the hovabator turners are too wide.
