Quote: Sounds exhausting! I am going to do one more tomorrow. These guys are just shy of 9 weeks. But now I will feel more comfortable buying more chicks when the feed store gets them back in.

Quote: Sure! What time should I be there??? (You know I'm kidding...right?)

Some man stopped today to buy eggs and got his little boy out to see chicks. Of course I have these front and center! I was trying to explain that they wern't always green - et. et. A language barrier means that he may not understand.

The EE's are very cute! I walked out of the feed store knowing the had Millie & porc D'uccles and a little quail d'Anver.

What do you all wrap your birds in for the freezer?

I vaccume seal sometimes with a rub or sauce. That means cutting in 1/2 mostly.

Ohhh soo been there!

More of those sneaky chicks hens hatched today. She had by far the best start rate of all his hens.

So the things to learn..
Dont wash your eggs in just water
Pre incubating seems to help!

LOL Rebecca....that was food coloring injected into the egg on day 10 to 14 of incubation......Sarah Carson & her daughter Gabey will be demoing itat the party..........lol

I knew I read SOMEWHERE that you could use food coloring to mark chicks! I put a nice dab on its back. I was trying to just pick it out from the group w/o having to pick each one up and listen (one of them was rattling as it breathed because it got cold). That nice dab colored 5 chicks! Imagine my surprise the next morning! I expected them to ask for "Loocky charms" and hunt down the end of the rainbow.

Oh I am so laughing. I KNEW it, just KNEW someone somewhere was using food coloring to mark chicks!

Don't wash your eggs in just water? I added a touch of oxine to the water and that was my only 100% hatch to date. Do you think that had any effect?

Was your pre-incubated egg a shipped egg?

I'm eggcited to get my Peter Ovalle rooster and eggs today.
I'm naming the cockerel Pete and and brothers from the hatch: Re-Pete

I think the new brooder is a hit with the little chicks. They were able to run/fly end to end and get into all sorts of mischief this morning.

Down and feathers flying but they seem happy. Even the bigger ones can stretch wings a bit in it. Im pretty sure Ill be adding wheels to it in the near future.

Ive been thinking of buying a rabbit cage and sticking a covered nest box and roosting plaform and putting it inside the run when introducing new young chicks to the flock. The all wire cages do not seem to be terribly expensive and have a fair amount of room. Might cramp larger birds but being able to let chicks outside without fear the bigger birds could go after them. Anyone use rabbit cages for protecting isolating birds?
Haven't used them for chickens but check CL etc for cheap ones. I see them all the time.

I just took a couple of supermarket whole birds that were supposedly unfrozen rubbed in a spice blend is like (rubbed in the exterior and sprinkled inside) added some peeled cracked garlic cloves and vacuum sealed them. Id probably do the same with processed birds. I think a marinade then vacuum seal would be good too. A vacuum sealer is the best thing for frozen meat and letting it marinade a bit first then sealing in with the marinade is great. Marinates more as it thaws. Keeps a long time too.
