Oh I couldn't help myself...I took a VERY quick peek into my Tolbunt Polish eggs. Did not touch them or move them. It's not day 7 yet but this is what I saw in one of them!!! Is it sad that this is one of the most exciting things I've ever done? Lol!

I'm so excited. Hopefully the other one will show veins when I candle on day 7. Is it possible for eggs that are viable to not be showing veins on day 5?

An egg can be a bit thicker than other eggs so the veins are harder to see. You should see them by day 10 for eggs like yours. With the Penedesenca eggs I often never see a vein.

probably not but you should not handle anything till at least day 7

It depends on how dark the egg is and how bright light is too. Blue LEDs have trouble getting through the shell. One of the reasons the Brinsea ova view is so good is the color of the light and the brightness.

With the darkest eggs you often have to wait until the embryo is big enough to see and then you see a shadow moving. Other times you have to look for the lack of an orange glow and the egg getting darker each time you candle.

Marans are so fun to hatch!

I think they are supposed to be 95% pullets with sexed feedstore chicks. I bought 3 for the "blue" eggs last year, but couldn't keep them all, so I gave away one and kept the "unique, pretty one" and another. I had no idea at that time that the reason the one was so unique was also the reason he was definitley a cockerel. This is what he turned out like...



I was able to find a home for him. The other one I kept laid plain old brown eggs. I rehomed her too.


I now have an OE roo I need to rehome. He is from OE shipped eggs for @Chickengirl1304 . He has BCM coloring and a big black beard. If anyone would like a nice roo or knows of anyone in the area who doesn, send them my way! He crowed for the first time 2 mornings ago and has been sleeping it the shed in a raccoon trap since then. If I can't find a home for him in the next week he is going to freezer camp. I really hate to do that with him.

One of the reasons I went for more expensive straight run chicks this year, figured if I was going to have to deal with roos then I should at least get better quality birds. Now we've decided to keep one BCM roo (3/4 were boys) and both banties, even though I know one is a roo (he crowed at me a couple of days ago) and the other looks like one also.

One year I noticed my hummingbird feeder swaying like crazy out on the front porch. I took a closer look and saw a huge American Goldfinch on it trying to drink the nectar out of it. It was the only one I have ever seen at my house. I didn't even know they would have any interest in nectar. It sure was gorgeous!

I really started paying attention to the local songbirds this year and we have some really pretty ones.

YES!!! You know what this means? The Tolbunt Polish has started laying again, and her eggs are still fertile!! Wahoo! I noticed she was in the coop for the first time ever(without me having put her in there) and the nest box was very dug out, my girls don't dig it out that much. Time to start collecting all the white eggs I get! The only problem is that I have 3 white egg layers - two Andalusians that lay almost every day, and the Tolbunt Polish. I have no way of telling apart the Tolbunt eggs from the Andalusian eggs so it looks like I'll be setting ALL my white eggs, even the infertile ones.

I love them too. I was obsessed with taking pictures of them on my recent trip to England.


Theirs are a bit different than ours.

But just as beautiful!

I only have room in my bator for 12 eggs, and want to set all her eggs until the three week mark, but I should have more room after candling my eggs to see which ones aren't developing.

How long left till the 3 week cutoff? Could you save hers until then and set them all at once?

probably not but you should not handle anything till at least day 7

I've found my tolbunts to have very good fertility and very good veining early on. They also hatch well. Good luck with them.
