California - Northern

What you go by is Square feet of floor space. It looks plenty high. Is it 2' x 3'? that would be 6 square feet so you can fit 1 and a half large fowl comfortably. If you give them a big run and let them have access to protected from rain space under the coop area, they you would have room for four large fowl. Make sure they have one foot of roost space per chicken in the coop part. You will need to make a nice ramp for them to get into the coop since Brahmas are too big to get that high easily.

Looks good so far!

Thanks for the info. You are right about the dimensions and they will have the underneath, too. I don't know how long the run will be yet - at least as long as the ramp! Lol.

I'm putting the nest box along the right side, inside the coop, with a hinged lid to get at the eggs.
How the space (2'x2'x3') on top of the hinged lidded nest box is in debate and I would love opinions. I think the chickens should have access to the space will just think of it as another place to roost / sit. My parents think the chickens will lay eggs in both places (on top of and in the nest box) because of they can "sit" both places.
Maybe this is why everyone puts the nest box outside the coop?

The Chickens enjoying the run this evening I tried to set up a video but having trouble with that so here are the stills

You can see the buffs keeping their distance from the Dels they often run for cover under my chair.

Rare moment when everyone is happy.

Congrats on finishing your coop! It looks so nice! Your Dels have gotten so big! How old are they now? You might put a temporary something in the run that your Buffs can hide behind or under until they are bigger or everyone has adjusted. With the first few rounds of chicks that I integrated into my adult flock, I put some cinder blocks in a square with a board on top. I left a narrow area that the little ones could get through but the hens couldn't. The babies also ran through the holes. That worked well. Then I started having broodies hatch eggs and they took care of the integration. Now my flock doesn't look twice when young ones join the group as long as the young ones know who is boss. It only takes a couple pecks for the hens to get the point across. When I give them treats, the older girls are right at my feet, the older pullets are on the outside of the ring, and the chicks dart in and out trying to grab the treat without anyone catching them! I love the entertainment!

THE COOP IS ALMOST DONE!!!

Which is good, because the chicks are only getting bigger, and I've had to be creative in placing their feeder and waterer because they were destroying them in their chariot races around the brooder. Better news, no pink/red combs yet!

Also, maybe a coop where I augmented the plans and let my artistic side run amok wasn't such a great idea for my first go at building a structure...
Beautiful!!! Your chicks are going to love it!

I count the age by when they arrived at the Feed store. So they will be 14 weeks wed.

Urgent message for all chicken lovers in Northern CA:
Know someone who can help a rooster in need? These roosters were saved from the cruel abuse of cockfighting and now face death at a shelter unless placement can be found. If you can spread the message, that would be wonderful. Working with a short timeframe here. (We will be taking one rooster)
Do you have room for a rooster? These boys were saved from the cruel abuse of cockfighting, and have been evaluated by staff at Yolo County SPCA. They are good around people and hens. However, they will not do well with other roosters. (because of what they were bred for, it is important NOT to have them around other roosters) If you can help find these roosters a home that would be amazing. Please share far and wide so these beautiful roosters have a chance at a good life after the abuse they have been through.

If you can help by adopting, please contact [email protected]

I am taking one boy, but if you can please take one too! Only take one if you can provide it a forever home, meaning no slaughtering, just loving!
