Okay, that was disgusting. I don't think the equine flies burrow, but I might be wrong.
Can we quit perpetuating it now

On a happier note I think one of my Dels has started practicing the egg song. My daughter came in telling me one of them was singing and just wouldn't shut up. Its still a few weeks away yet but I can hope.

The foster buffs are adorable they sing to each other at night and sometimes Ill catch them sounding like song birds

Awesome! It's so exciting for me when new hens reach point of lay.

Never mind it's not shrink wrapped because the membrane in the egg is still on the egg, they just have some kind of weird membrane around them. Do I take them out of the membrane?

They both quit close to day 18.

Chris, they will be mal positioned--They are supposed to be at this point. They did not live long enough to turn.

It is a huge error to blame the position for the death. Death happened before the chick would have moved into position.

The marans looked to be almost ready. But I defer to the experts.

I will spare you my stories of having to deal with fly strike in animals then :).
Watched an episode of mystery diagnosis where a bride had bot fly problems on her wedding day. Yuck. Once they figured it out though it was pretty easy fix. Just not an easy case to diagnose.

How can you tell that it was Day 18? My last hatch I had quite a few like this but wasn't sure how to tell what went wrong.
It would be best to completely take the chick out and compare to:

See that there is still yolk on day 17 to 18. you can see yolk in the pictures from @BCollie
