California - Northern

I've had a few older hatchery hens pass due to egg laying conditions, this past year. Uc Davis did necropsies to confirm the majority, the last one had the same symptoms .
It is hard to lose birds, but some of these hens were getting egg bound pretty regularly. Internal laying and one had fatty liver syndrome (many hatchery birds run into it)
I'm finding life and chores are easier with hardier birds. Even in this heat , the Marans are even laying well. Although they do have fans, I don't have to run out , catch them and hand feed them calcium tabs if they have an egg laying issue.
So hatching the healthiest will really pay off later on in time and heartache.
And I still have any hatchery birds left. They're in their 3rd year now. I won't get hatchery again due to egg issues. They seem to be doing quite well.
But it is nice to go out, enjoy your birds, do your chores and be done.

You're right, Ron. I took two chicks, a TJ and the Marans, out of the membranes and both had unabsorbed yolks. Judging by the chart and the shape of the yolk - still perfectly round - it looks like they quit on day 17.

Well...that's it for this hatch. I ended up with 5 Marans, 3 Welsummers, 1 Olive Egger, 1 Tolbunt Polish, and 1 Black Tail Japanese. 5 eggs in the bator quit late. Anyone know what can cause this?

The only problem I had is that the chicks were sticky after hatching(but had no problem hatching), which if I read right, means my humidity was too high during incubation.

Time to clean out the bator. What's the best way to do that? Do I need to clean the styrofoam too, or just the plastic water tray that everything fell into?

What would cause a chicken to pick at her own wing? i found levi my ee earlier with a bloody wing and a chunk taken out of it. she had blood all over her beak, wing and near her eyes. i havr her in a cage inside atm

Lice
mites
protein deficiency

Or just a silly chicken!

Use blue kote for the wound.

No lice,no mites
she actually took a chunk out of her wing along with some featgers. she isbt eating the feathers though which is what i thought she would do if its a protien definciancy. i dont have blue kote but i put some antibiotic ointment on it and covered it with gauze and vetwrap to keep her from picking at it
