Thank you! And that sounds like fun. I LOVE your automatic chicken feeder, by the way, have factored its design into my 'dreamtractor' which will, we hope, become a reality someday.

Not yet, RiRxBr, we're looking at buying a house in this fantastic market and getting a dog and some chicks, not necessarily in that order. I'm a fanatic researcher, so have been reading and reading and reading all the great stuff on this forum.

Three qs to start, let me know if they need their own threads:

Can someone give me a point towards a "how to socialize chicks" thread? We want them to be tame and kind so we can show them off to neighbors & local kids, thereby reducing being tattled on by looky-loos.

And what kinds of predators do we have to worry about here in the marvelous East Bay? Raccoons, coyotes, birds of prey, idiot neighbor children wanting to do a cheap 'egging'?

We want chicks, would it be better to get them from a local store or someone local? The reports of taking names-and-numbers for possible NAIS tagging make me nervous.

Ok, this north and south and central california.. whats gonna happen?
i grew up in Nevada City,, Northern cal. moved to Central coast.. (some still call it northern Cal) now i live in Hollister which has been called Northern Cal by some and others claim its Central california...

I will make a decision after the NEXT BIG earthquake.. as to which part is left of california..

best to you

Justino,

What do you want to know about Monterey County, ( i have lived there for 20 yrs)

if your gonna be in teh country then no problemo, but in the city well first loud sound your neighbors hear from your roos, and your goose will be cooked. outta sight and earshot you will be fine.

Country is good City folks, (alarge Percent of them) arent very country friendly. Lots of money tends to make some folks NASTY

Hmmm.. First Question about the how to socialize chicks thread....not a separate one I've read recently, you could try a search, but lots of us do it all the time in our own way, so you start the thread, and you're gonna get some overjoyed BYC'ers willing to share their happy chicken family stories!
I have 72 chickens, and more than 90% are hand tame and love personal attention, almost annoyingly so...

Second Question, sorry, I'm too far North for reals! 3 1/2 hours above you, different flora and fauna!

Third Question, if you want chicks, and you're on BYC - get them from us!! You'll hook up with so many people here, all you have to do is ask, eventually you can get whatever breed you like, you may find yourself hatching eggs yourself (dont doubt me!)....I prefer myself getting my chicks from someone I know..or hatching the eggs myself...I have some hatchery birds from the feedstore, big disappointment (crossbeak, way off of standard for the breed, etc)...just remember, you never know until you ask...just PM people, they are very helpful! Let me know if you need anything else! Tina/tfpets
