California - Northern

Just called to check on the sick birds. Liz made her DH go and check on them this morning. When he got to the coop one was out exploring the run and the other was in the nest box laying. No lingering signs of what ever took 1 yesterday around noon and had the other 2 unable to return to their coop without laying down to rest and regain their balance every few steps. Liz said they spent the night huddled together on the floor of the coop.

Hope whatever it was is gone and stays gone. She was more than a little upset yesterday. Her previous chickens have been "livestock", these girls are " pets".

Finally found a friend that has a rooster, and therefore eggs I can stick under Frieda! 1 rooster to 12 hens, so there's a pretty good chance the eggs are fertile, right? And she says most the eggs she opens are fertile. No idea what color eggs/what kind of chickens, but since I realized that Frieda's been sitting almost 2 weeks already, I figured I should stop being so picky (especially for free eggs!)

Given that Frieda doesn't quite fill a 1 foot by 1 foot nest box when fully pancaked out (she's a bantam/gamebird/who-knows-what cross), about how many eggs should I get when I go over to pick them up?

Great news Amy! My OEGB's can't handle many of the big girls eggs, but they are extra-large eggs. My guess is that it will be a guessing game until you actually see them. My girls max could cover 6 medium sized eggs, but they weigh right about a pound at 5 years old.

DD and I candled the pigeon eggs today. 1 still kicking hard enough I could feel it through the shell, the other we couldn't find any movement in but gave it back to them anyway.

The other pair she picked up are gathering feathers in the back of the crate and playing with the grass stems. They were not a mated pair but we will have hopes they will pair up and can help raise the parlor roller pigeons eggs/babies.

Bad fire my way. Schools are going to be closed near us in Pollock Pines.
I live 2 miles from Sly Park / Jenkinson Reservoir
here were a few pics I got from the Dam and far side of the lake

We had one start about 9 am yesterday. It's less than 25 miles away on the ridge 1 behind us. Last report was 100 acres. Pictures here are pretty useless with all the trees but we can see orange areas of flame/smoke.

yeah tough to get a good pic here to except from the dam. This one is 2000 acres as of about 1pm

No falling ashes/embers for a change. Smoke is usually blowing away from us but we have been smoked over a few times. It took the local news crews 31 hours to report anything on it. If it's not Medford it's not important.

Do you keep your pigeons in the same area as your chickens?
