What kind of evidence should I be looking for to determine if by birds have worms?

I've heard that people generally treat their birds for worms regularly anyway so I need to determine how and when should I treat my flock.

Should I treat the 13 week olds at the same time I treat the rest. 4 of my 8 birds are laying after treating what is the waiting period before being able to eat the  eggs?

Would be best to get a bunch of poop samples and have a fecal tests done, but if that's too much work, just buy some Valbazen and give 20mg per 2.2 pounds and repeat in ten days. That dose will effectively treat most worms. Treat all birds.

To calculate the proper dose, take the weight of bird in pounds, divide by 2.2, times 20mg, divide by 113.6 (number of mg per one ml of Valbazen). The answer will be the amount for that bird.

Examples:

1 pound pullet
1/2.2 x 20/113.6 = 0.08ml

5 pound hen
5/2.2 x 20/113.6 = 0.4ml

10 pound hen
10/2.2 x 20/113.6 = 0.8ml

Is the Modesto show big? I missed it last time, and it's so close to me. Probably 20 minutes. So I'd like to check it out next time.
So envious, my closest show is almost 4 hours north and Red Bluff is 5.5 hours south. I can't seem to make it over to the Eureka show in February, still almost 4 hours.

It is usually 2500 to 3000+ birds.

Nice! I'll have to go for sure

Use valbazen and do not eat the eggs for 6 days after each dose(worm them again after 7 to 10 days so two treatments)
i was waiting to eat at least 14 days. Good to know :)
I heard with either piperzine or wazine, it actually stays in the birds system for a VERY long time. Which is scary

I went out to check for eggs, and Frieda was up. No problem--I know she's likely just having her food/water/poo break. Then I saw that one of the eggs I gave her last night was broken (not stinky, thank goodness), and the remaining eggs were covered. The yolk was still really drippy, so it must've happened recently. I brought the eggs in, rinsed them with hot water, then dried them with a paper towel. I replaced the dirty bedding in the nest, and put the eggs back. Is there still a good chance I'll get 3 chicks, or am I doomed? Assuming, of course, that Frieda goes back on...

On the other hand, it looks as though I don't need to worry about Frieda adding eggs to the clutch--when I got home and checked for eggs, there was an egg next to her from one of our girls (I marked the ones I placed under Frieda last night).

Smart lady, I always ended up with extras which will make you nuts!

Good news--she's back on and hunkered down

It's probably a good thing I happened to go out while she was taking her break, or else that goo would've hardened--one egg was about 80% covered.

I read a report on them today--The medicine in valbazen is gone within the day so you only have to worry about the eggs in the pipeline at the time of treatment.

I have never had a problem bringing something home from any shows and I show all over the US. At Modesto I will be one of three people checking that there are no sick birds at the show. It is a personal decision though.

Again, I am quite encouraged. Some more questions. Must one be NPIP to exhibit fowl? Also, I do not vaccinate due to such small hatches. I'm trying to build up a healthy flock by using as few medications as possible. Does one need to have have vaccinated birds? Thank you in advance for answering what are probably extremely ignorant questions.

Walt really reassured me at the Stockton show about disease exposure at large shows like this one. He said he doesn't even quarantine when he brings his birds home. (and he had a lot of birds there) I'm looking forward to drooling over his birds again. And laughing at those call ducks! So loud for such a teeny tiny duck!

Stay safe!
I'm really excited :) We'd really like to go to this show and take birds! Last year my family insisted on burying my Grandfather that weekend. I didn't think they would change their minds for a chicken show so I didn't bother to ask.

Told my husband about the show being in Modesto and he said we must put a ban on any family deaths. No one is allowed to die during that time period next year!
