I'm having fun with the silkie/sizzle/cochin mystery mix from Papa Brooder (Jeff).

Here's a neat looking one - I'm guessing barred/cuckoo smooth silkie(?):

And then I have a black&white barred/cuckoo sizzle:

It started out with just white tips on all the feathers.

And 2 gray/white barred/cuckoo sizzles:

These were slow to show their barring - just noticed it recently.
Unfortunately, the pictures don't really do their barring justice.

Also, I got the curliest white frizzle cochin:

They are so fun.

Nice!

Great video! Thanks for sharing.

P.S. Of the 4 day-olds I got from you, 3 are pullets (crested cream legbar, penedesenca, & mystery cross)! The pene cockerel is so pretty too.

I have two of the P pene cockerels and they are gorgeous!
So my cream legbars, U of a blues and OE started laying

They are a little flighty since they were raised by my hen. But the UofA did NOT like me taking her egg from her, lol.
She was very unhappy with me. Love new layers
Post pictures of the eggs!

Quote: I keep checking for scalping in thegrow out pen. I have the group your 2 Goldens came from that are reasy to go into that pen, but I don;t know how they would be if I put them in with the older ones. There is 2 1/2 weeks between batches but it might be a critical age. I might move the older ones to the pen on the ground and put these in the raised pen. Any I don;t keep for breeding will be freezer birds. They say you can process at 8 weeks but I have found they give a lot more meat if they have another 3-4 weeks on them.

Anyone from Stanislaus county?
Butte County here, but welcome to the thread!!!! Glad to have you!

We're near Arcata, so no doubt about being northern. I'd say Santa Cruz is the line. I think of Salinas, Monterey, Fresno, Modesto etc as central. San Louis Obispo and south... southern. BTW, we just got 2.5 inches of rain in 24 hours and my hens ignored their wet backs!
Welcome to you too! You must have gotten drenched the last few day.....

Chickens drink this according to a vet book I read:
Non laying adults - 5.5% of their body weight per day
Laying hens - 13.6% of their body weight per day
Growing chicks - 18-20% of their body weight per day

Given the above it would be impossible to de-worm all without under medicating some and over medicating others. The only way I could see it working would be to put all chicks in one pen, laying hens in another and non-layers in a third. The figure out the total weight of each group, figure out how much they'll drink in a day and do this math:

Weight of flock in pounds, divide by 2.2, times 50, divide by 100. The answer to that will be the amount of Safeguard needed for the amount of water they will drink in one day.

That sounds like way more work than I am up too. How many days do they need to be treated?

Am I alone in feeling overwhelmed by all the information about worming? Can someone explain what I should do to protect my chickens? All the contradictions make my head spin.
No...you aren't alone. My head is spinning too!

Quote: It was...most definitley. There are some really great sounding recipes I have found, but I wanted to start with a simple one first. This was dedinitley a very easy one.

I got the report on the Silkies.

These are the bacterial findings in the bird with the yolk sac issue:

T1402559-01 1 Liver Tissue Enterococcus faecalis Rare#
Escherichia coli Rare#

T1402559-01 T1402559-01.0004 Yolk Sac Tissue Pool Enterococcus faecalis Lg#
Escherichia coli Lg#
Mixed flora Sm#

LIVER: moderate vacuolation, rare focal necrosis (1 section).
YOLK SAC: moderate caseous material with cluster of bacteria primarily adjacent to epithelium.
All other tissues were unremarkable.

He has notes suggesting the other got chilled in transport or possibly was just a failure to thrive chick, but says there was no apparent cause of death. It was one of the first to die.
So...does this mean enterococcus and E. coli?

we had about 1 1/2" of rain last night in about a hour period. it snowed over the Sierra. I drove over Carson Pass at 10 pm and was snowing up there.
pretty cool for September.
The King fire site got the same rain i think. at least on the south side of the site.
besides where they are going to let the fire burn out on its own the fire is gone.
just smoldering trees and stumps remain of the fire.

as someone posted on my El Dorado F.B site

" The King is dead "
thank goodness its over. a lot less stress now for my community
Such a relief that it is finally out. It will be a long recovery though.

How cute! Mine will be going on lockdown on Monday. They are going under my old reliable blue Wyandotte broody to hatch and raise. I moved her to the broody coop nest box this morning with her procelain eggs. If she settles in quickly I may move them sooner. Can't wait to see what I get!

I was coming home from errands this morning, and saw a sign for our community garden plant sale and tour. So I went by and visited all the garden beds and heard about the bees and talked to them about their chickens. They are thinking of getting some more chickens, so I sent them over here to find a local breeder.

Sounds like a fun morning!

I got my first Olive Eggs yesterday! Not quite as olive as I had hoped, but definitley more so than the Ameraucana girls. I have 2 that could have laid it but not sure which one.

Blue green on the left, olive in the middle, blue on the right. Not great lighting.

The two on the left are a nice Green. The one on the right may have missed the dark brown genes.

I have a couple of OEs that I hope will start laying soon. I also have 4 UofA Blues and some Partridge Penes to get going.

Like these:

Had a racoon in my chicken cage Thur night. So scary. One chicken lost some feathers, the rest were ok. I have since closed every door with screws and the main door locked. It got under a wire. My husband hadn't put dirt inside to cover the wire with moving and now hunting. I have put long boards and those metal fence posts around the perimeter of the coop wire. It was an ordeal screwing doors at 1am with a flashlight. Daily I ck to see if anything is different to the outside. I know it will return and pray each night for protection. My hubby returns next week end and he will secure the inside with dirt. Meanwhile they are locked in every night.

I have two girls EE's that look similar. Yours look taller. One lays a blue, the other a blue green. The blue color is my favorite.

Well...that doesn't sound to bad. I think I have Wazine and one that is in pellet form (can't remember the name). Is there a place that gives the process for sending in a fecal to Davis? I sent the one pullet for necropsy there (they still haven't sent me a bill for the shipping).

Quote: Oh...I hope so. That gives me hope!

How scary! So glad to hear no one was injured or lost their life. The only thing I have ever caught actually in the pen was the feral cat and a mouse. But I am sure they have been there, at least in the outer pen. I had a skunk kill all of my BC Marans pullets but one a year or so back. We have a "secure" pen they get locked into every night. I put "secure" in quotes because I am sure if something really wanted in it coulf get there.
