Make sure that whatever breed you get that the variety and breed are recognized by the APA or they are not show quality.

Thank you Walt. I will not buy cur chickens nor will I buy just any ol' chicken. I want my 4h kids to at least have decent stock for the show. They don't have to win, but it wouldn't hurt.

Wow! That's almost bigger than my last home. Is that hardwood flooring?!

It is 10'x20' feet and will be divided into a feed room and 3 chicken rooms. The flooring is cheap laminate (fake wood) and cost less per foot than plywood or linoleum.

How are your chickens doing? Did Ellie get to be a mom?

It is a hard time of the year to get chicks. Breeding pens are broken apart and molting slows down egg laying.

With what you want it might be a good idea to patiently wait for good heritage stock. If one wants egg layers in the meantime, there should be something on craigs list?

I'm ok with waiting... I'm not too sure about craigslist... I think I'd be better off waiting.

Watching chicks chase itty-bitty crickets is just about the most hilarious thing ever. They also really like clover sprouts. And yes, they have chick grit (free selection, mixed into their dust bath tray, and sprinkled on top of their food with the sprouts).

Given the amount of feed they are going through, I doubt a tablespoon of clover sprouts between them all is going to hurt them, LOL! I'm already shaking my head at the chick feeder. That thing is going to be outgrown in a week or so.

I'll try and take a video next time I give them crickets (I shook in about 20 last time; have about that many left in the jar).

It made me think, "No wonder that little one revived...too much goodness to miss out on!"

Asking for positive thoughts and prayers for my daughter, Erin, who is hoping for a face to face interview with Canine Companions for Independence. She would love nothing more than to become an apprentice trainer with them and had a phone interview yesterday. She worked as a dog walker thought college graduated in 2013, spent July-May in New Jersey working in an eventing barn as a barn manager and has come to the conclusion that being a dog trainer would be her dream job. CCC appears to be a solid company offering decent pay, benefits, advancement ops etc. I know she would be perfect in the position but unfortunately they have a policy against mommies of applicants making any hiring decisions.

Ohhh and of my three kids she is my go to chicken helper and is responsible for the fact that my most recent broody hatch all act like puppies instead of wild things when I go out there. She spends time daily hand feeding and talking to them

The new feathers were growing back in the day after I started using nutrena feather fixer. I went back to Higby's and bough a couple more bags on Monday.

Next year I am going to time my hatches better so that I will have some starting to take over at molt.

I need to use that! I can find feather fixer at TS in Jackson, but not the laying food, but any would help. I get 0-1 egg a day. I had to buy store bought eggs!
