Most pigs are IME (sure, they're cute when their little, but they don't stay little). When I was a kid, when the neighbors removed the piglets from the sows, they had to alert everyone because sows would often break out and go on rampages. Facing down a 500 lb raging sow with nothing but a buggy whip is terrifying. Pretty much gave me a life-long dislike of them.

I raise American Guinea Hogs. They do stay relatively small, but are big enough to butcher for the freezer. Good temperament has been selected for in the breed, so they are docile, even the sows with litters. They don't have show classes for them, though. But, they are a good backyard or homestead pig.

@Minflick did the sow have tusks? I thought only boars had tusks. I taught mine to back up and give me space.

Anyone near Oakland have a 5'-ish length of chicken wire or hardware cloth I could buy? I need to make a top for the brooder this weekend and I *really* don't want to buy a $70 roll of chicken wire at Home Depot. I'm open to other ideas and advice, too.

You could get that plastic mesh for the top, unless you're needing to keep things from going in through the top as well as the chicks in.

we interrupt the chicken chatter to bring you this

And This

You may now return to your coops.
I am wearing my 2012 National League Champions shirt today.

There are some Dodgers and Cardinals fans here that want to see the Giants go down.

They are very sad and mad at the Royals today.

I admire your fashion sense Ron. You should all know that I named one of my 4 week old chicks Posey. I will post pics later but she may be watching the game in the house as a good luck charm.

I am sorry that people are saddened by their teams' losses...but only just a little

I should pre order the new shirt for the 2014 world series championship!

How much 20% corid powder do I add to a gallon waterer for treatment of cocci?

I use 1.5 teaspoons for 5-7 days, then 1/3 teaspoon for 7 days. That is the recommended amount according to the FDA and mfg for a severe outbreak.

The little Lavender Orp that I found weak & laying on it's back last night is still alive this morning, I guess force feeding it some probiotics helped! Going to the store some time today to get electrolytes.
