Hello The Keeper and kwewu7 ( Some of you guys sure have interesting names - Didn't your folks have a baby name glossary? LOL)
Now about those mealworms… When I was a kid over half a century ago, way over!) I remember rearing them in a round oatmeal box with a slide on lid on a mixture of crushed Wheaties and, you guessed it, Quaker Oatmeal. I remember having a folded cloth taken from the ragbag in between of which one would find the mealworm larvae. They seemed to move out of the medium to form to gather in between those rag layers. Also remember sprinkling a mist of water on top of the rag at each opening to prevent desiccation. Soon found out if one accidentally sprayed in too much water a hideous mold would grow on the rag! That rag laid on top of the mixed medium making it easy to fetch a supply of larvae. Once one had learnt to be a bit judicious with the water it was easy to rear enough larvae to keep my small reptile collection fed. But that is small potatoes compared to rearing enough of them to feed a hundred or so chickens and the blue birds that infest my front yard. So:

In your expert opinions how does one go about rearing enough for all those chickens and the beautiful bluebirds? Details please… Yes, we may discuss the process each of you prefer: (209) 327-2068
Thank you,
Neal, the Zooman

Today was a nice break from all the rain. The sun came out and the chickens were enjoying the fresh green grass:)

I've been using pine shavings for so long, I don't want anything else in coops. I grew up using straw with my parents who always had poultry. Poor absorbancy and they break down fast. I also don't like the fact that mites can survive in the hollow chutes of straw. I have one coop with a concrete slab and another is wood up on piers, so sand won't work in the houses. I see you raise Penedesencas. I remember reading about them once. They are an interesting breed. They look about the size of Leghorns.

yes I love my Penedesenca. they are about the same size as a Leghorn except the blacks which are more dual purpose.

I really like seeing pictures of you chickens. They look so nice out in the grass too!
They are going crazy over the acorns and all the tender greens that are sprouting with the rains. I can't let them out everyday though. The coyotes are too much of a problem. They can snatch a chicken and be gone in seconds.

@PetRock ...candled :) I had 6 clears...shipping to Lake County is Hard on embryos. :( There is one questionable but the other 6 are full of veins and wigglers. Very excited. I am totally looking to forward to this hatch. The whole "What's it going to be?" question heightens my excitement! 7 is a good number for her but I learned that she can comfortably cover 10. ...the 3 extras were under another broody. Anyway. so looking forward to 12/26...what a nice way to celebrate the day after Christmas.

I had 6 silkie mixes hatch today. I lost a little blue one

...maybe you all can tell me what happened. It had a long attached and very moist umbilical cord and the shell was yolky. Saw that then went out later and the poor little thing was about 5 inches from the nest box and was dead I am guessing that they yolk didn't fully absorb but I don't know what the deal was with the cord?? Could the egg have bee smooshed before it was ready? The half shell that was yolky was smooshed.

So I have 4 darling dark grey/black chicks and 1 blue one. I separated the mama last night so that her broody sister wouldn't abandon the NYD HAL eggs in order to help raise these babies and by 3:00 today they had all hatched. Feathered feet, 5 toes and beards...I am surprised that no MF coloring came through but I am not much of a geneticist. They all look silkiesque but time will tell. Very sweet and this never gets old!! I am fighting the urge to bring 4 of them in the house

So now I have just two girls on eggs

Norma on PetRock's every exciting barnyard mix eggs due to hatch the 26th

Gracie Belle on 7 shipped eggs du on 1/1/15. I am not expecting much good news on the 18th when I candle. I am hoping that I can get 1 or 2 out of this hatch but the eggs were packed so poorly that I will be thrilled it get even 1 chick out of it.

All the birds loved being out today lots of green, lots of space and even some sunshine.

That's exciting news! I'm so glad that some are developing! With the last 2 batches of shipped eggs that I incubated, I ended up with 4 hatch out of 42 eggs and 1 hatch out of 36 eggs. One batch came by truck from N CA and the other came from Oklahoma. When you are ready for Pita Pinta eggs, maybe Monet and I can take a field trip and meet you somewhere to do the exchange.
