I have 2 of the small Premier ones and 1 of the big ones. Yesterday, I moved 21 chicks that are 2-3 weeks old out into my old quail pen. The larger Premier plate fits in it perfectly. They were all cozy under it when I went to bed and all survived the night. They aren't straying too far from the plate today but it is still early. They have twice the space in this pen than they had in my metal tank brooder. This quail pen is the stop story of a double deck pen and I can look straight in and see the chicks under the plate which is nice. My family is happy that I moved the chicks out of the house this early. Of course, I currently have Pita Pinta chicks hatching in the incubator but I think that Chris is taking a few of them along with his Cream Legbar chicks that will hopefully hatch this weekend.
I think I'll order one, then. I like that they go down to 32*! Hopefully when I hatch in three weeks I won't need it to go that low! :) A few days of chicks in the house is all my DH can tolerate! If is keep them inside for a week under a brooder lap, then switch to the warming plate, I supposed they will figure it out?

How big is your old quail pen and how many LF chicks do you have in it? Trying to build a new brooder pen now and wondering how large to make it.

I have been very happy with the ones I bought. It is a little tricky to know what height to adjust them to. I just raised a little bit every day or two when I cleaned out the brooder. The one that I put outside is lower in the back because there is already a size difference between the boys and girls with my Pita Pinta chicks. I brood in large plastic Sterlite containers for the first week and I had my hubby drill a hole for the power cord to fit through. Then we stuffed some paper towels in the opening around the cord because our Siamese mix kitten was fishing for chicks through the hole. At a week, I move them into a metal stock tank and the drainage hole is the perfect size for the cords to fit through. I think that the chicks sleep better without additional light and they sure have feathered in quicker than the ones I raised last year under a red heat lamp.

I use almost the same: steralite for a week, then I add in a "play-scape" of an old large wire dog crate, where I put branches, hunks of grass with roots & dirt attached for them to scratch in. But, I've never brooded more than 10 chicks, so need something bigger and more permanent! And safe!
