The trio in quarantine
700

Left to right; Jerk, Nuts, and Twitch. Jerk has been removed so Nuts and Twitch can raise the wee one.

Since the pigeons and quail are so quiet, DH can't complain, They are driving the hawks crazy, seeing all the tasty morsels and no way to get to them.

Q: Which colors make the best broodies?
A: Yes.

They are definitely cochinbators. I have broody bantam cochins almost year round - though they do take a break to molt. At some point or another all of my little cochin girls take their turn being broody. Some take more than one turn. Some are professional broodies. Happy to help you out if you decide you want warm fluffy mamas.
I am overrun this year with broody Langshan! They are huge girls and determined sitters! I am getting ready to take a group of them to the farm to put them in a breeding pen with one of the cockerels or my rooster Shang. But everyday, it seems llike another one goes broody! Crazy girls! I've only been giving them a few eggs because they are all first timers. I have 1 with 3 chicks that are less than 2 weeks old and she is constantly leaving them to fend for themselves. Fortunately, my flock is used to having chicks running around so they let them be.

Maybe if you chick proof your breeding pen they might just do the work right there.

I think Jules is working on a post about it. Set the date aside for a ride to Turlock again for many of you & welcome to the new Chicken Lovin' friends too.

Is there a average to their being broody? How many hens would you need to have a broody available most of the time? What colors do you have and do you sell eggs or chicks?
Is there a number of hens per roo suggested to keep peace?

I got a trio that was from Chooklet originally. First two girls went broody at 6 months (one had laid 6 eggs, the other 11 eggs). Gave them both eggs and they raised chicks. Ethel went broody again (laid 8 eggs in between) and again raised chicks. Two daughters from the first hatch, who are now 6 months old are both broody now. So far...never without a cochinbator! A little bitty one, mind you. 4 LF chicks is about all they can manage as the chicks outgrow them so fast!
