I have Black Cooper Marans and Oliver Eggs (Ameraucana x BCM) ready to go into lockdown tomorrow. Will I be able to tell the chicks apart when they hatch?

I hatch Blue Marans and Olive eggers, and the OE always seem to have "eyeliner" and more white/cream that is less defined that the white on the chests of the Marans chicks. You can pull up photos of BCM chicks, and compare. You'll see that the OE chicks generally have a different look to them. I think Bev Davis might have some BCM chick photos on her site...

Welcome to BYC! I am in Paradise. I am not aware of ny game bird breeders in the area, but there were plenty at the NorCal show in Red Blff this past weekend so they mst be around. Maybe @Kaylish knows someone.

Can you separate the eggs into baskets that would confined the chicks? There seems to be a lot of variation with OE...the ones I just hatched were clearly marked like chipmunks, but 1 had feathered legs and one didn't. The one I hatched from @Chickengirl1304 last year looked exactly like a Marans, but her comb is slightly different. It was not noticeable until she was a few months old

When I want to keep chicks separate at hatch, I place them in clear plastic tomato or grape containers from Costco. I just have to remember to put a piece of shelf liner in the bottom of the container so the chicks can walk without slipping. I have eggs in my incubator from both of my Pita Pinta breeding pens. I'm going to use the separate containers at hatch and then give each pen a different color zip tie when I put them in the brooder.

So, yesterday I had dd read me the humidity levels. While I was nursing the baby. This morning one was at 0. How long can they survive like that. It was hopefully only some of the night...... ? Lockdown is tonight so I will candle but wondering about the damage! Feeling Sad About Having Someone Else Check For me.

That doesn't sound like it could be accurate. What is the humidity of the air in your house? I bet it is at least 20%. Do you have anything else you can check it with?

It's accurate. We are in the high desert mountains. Rain last month had us at 20- 25%. I ran this hatch at 35%. The chicks pop out better with low humidity at 6500 feet elevation. But not this low. I hope they are far enough along and it was a short period of time.
