OK...I finally got a gallon of Oxine and want to use it to clean out the hatcher so I can move the next batch over. I have been using diluted bleach and spraying it on with a spray bottle up to now, then rinsing after about 10 minutes. I did not get the activator. The directions on the bottle do not say how to use it for that. Can I do it the same way? Full strength or diluted? How long do I leave it on? Any other pertinent info?

Thanks in advance!

I use 6 1/2 oz to a gallon of water for cleaning. Oh, and I always put the incubator out in the sun to dry which also kills bacteria.

Go to "shagbarkbantams.com" website and she has a page about the many uses of Oxine and the different strengths she uses and why.

Good info - Thank you! Am I remembering correctly that Thiamine deficency can also be caused by medicated feed? (I am currently feeded un-medicated starter)

Funny thing, I actually took nutrituional yeast as a supplement when I was pregnant -it worked wonders on morning sickness.

I have used Brewer's yeast because that is what I had on hand and cured a newly hatched chick of thiamine deficiency along with the other foods I listed. And yes the medicated feed blocks thiamine so it can cause problems for some chicks.

Jason....a friend of mine (Glee) is coming to your place this weekend to get some turkey eggs and offered to pick up eggs is anyone else was interested. I would like to have her pick up Penedesenca eggs if you have any available, but want whatever lay the darkest eggs. I am looking for about a dozen. Can you PM me on what you suggest and your availability and prices?

While tearing down our old fence, we found a board covered in termites in a pile on our neighbor's side. So what did we do? What any normal person would! Grabbed that board and put it into the chicken coop, of course.

That made their day, I think.

What is the rage of creating orpingtons in every flavor imaginable? I joined an Orp group on FB and Im seeing everything from Columbian to Tolbunt. With some of these how much Orp is left in there anyway I wonder.

I'm sure something like this appears in other breeds right?

I don't think "how much Orp is there" applies in chickens. Either what you're breeding meets the SOP or it doesn't. If you're creating a new color outside the SOP, then you're trying to match the physical characteristics for size and shape as closely as possible but in a new color (and this is pretty much how all chicken breeds and colors have been developed). From what I see, a large part of the enthusiasm for the breed is all the color projects that are possible. Wyandottes also seem to have a lot of color projects cropping up, and I'm sure other breeds do too, I just don't pay all that much attention to other breed discussions.
