Just thought I'd ask one last time if anyone is heading from the Bay Area to Reno this month? Someone in Reno would like one of my cockerels but she is not able to come out here and get him. Anyone? Anyone?

I think I am done with broody raised chicks for the season too. I was going to put the BC Marans eggs that I was promised when there was a very poor hatch from someone I ordered eggs from thru FB, but he keeps saying he is shipping "this week" and then doesn't. I didn't ask him to send replacements...he volunteered so I am not sure how to feel about him not sending them. I even messaged him saying it was starting to get hot out here and I just needed to know if they were coming or not so I could pack up the bators. He "saw" the message 3 days ago but has not replied. I guess that is a "no"....

Sorry Im not though I do love playing chicken train usually.

Ok, if I attempt to slip my broody a few chicks in a couple of weeks, does anyone have anything they're actually looking for? Or does anyone have something in a recently set bator that I can buy a few of for her? I can't keep them in the long run. Though I guess if I got some mottled chicks maybe I could keep one. Maybe I'll PM Jeff.

I'm hoping my broody hens will stay broody for a little longer. I plan to try and get another dozen of Rosecomb eggs, as NONE hatched from the last batch.

Has anyone ever had a hen stay broody for more than 21+ days?

Today was not a good afternoon.

I discovered that I lost one of my favorite chicken earrings some time during the day.
I found my favorite sunglasses had broken in a place that can't be fixed.

To top it all off - I found Jean-Luc, my beautiful black copper marans roo, had passed away today.

I thought he had been doing better with more protein & vitamins.

I'll miss him but I know he is happy on the other side of the rainbow bridge with lots of company.
I'll be making another trip to Davis - I need answers.

So sorry to hear that you lost Jean-Luc. It was a bad chicken day for me today, also. I am busy sewing costumes for a play so I didn't keep as close a watch on my flock as I usually do. We went out this evening to find 1 dead cockerel in a juvie pen and one of my big black Langshan hens with her head stuck in the decorative metal on our swing. Poor thing. What a terrible way to die. I also had 2 black Langshan sitting together on 14 eggs due to hatch today. I had already pulled 2 that were squashed but others were hatching and looked fine so I left the rest with them. Tonight there were 2 dead chicks, 2 more squashed ones, and 1 live one plus 2 in the process of hatching but not looking good. I took the chick, the partially hatched ones, and the rest of the eggs and stuck them in my cabinet hatcher. Why do these things always seem to happen when I already have too much on my plate?!
