California - Northern

Santa Clara, near San Jose.  My bigger coop seems fine;  it's just the little broody coop that has the infestation.

Sounds like maybe it's better to just move them and risk them abandoning the eggs.  :-(

ho, I know right where that is... I grew up in Sunnyvale and after I got married we lived in Willow Glen then we moved to Napa...then we moved to Montana after we retired.... I love it up here...

I agree that the chicks will be at risk if they get mites. I've lost a couple chicks to mites before I knew that they had them. I ordered Frontline spray from amazon to use on my adult and teenage birds. I put a small squirt under each wing and one at the vent area. For the chicks, I use Scalex Mite & Lice Spray for Birds. I purchased it at a pet store and figure if it is okay for parrots, etc., it is okay for chicks. It is a spray that contains Pyrethrins. I use it like the Frontline with a squirt under each wing and one at the vent. I've also used Sevin Dust for mites and I've been told that it is okay to use on chicks & in nest boxes.

I've been using Manna Pro Poultry Protector on chickens and coop nestboxes and perches. It is organic and can be used on chicks and safely as often as you need by following directions on the label. They also have a mite protector spray too but Poultry Protector has been all we've needed. I like that it's organic and easy to use and safe for youngsters. I've received shipped birds crawling with lice and Poultry Protector 3 days in a row was all that was needed to fix the problem. Just to be sure we followed up again with another spraying the following week. I suppose a stronger poison solution like frontline or pyrethrins have their place but I tried the organic Poultry Protector just to see how it worked and I've used nothing else for 4 years and eggs don't have to be withheld.

I actually have some of this in my poultry first aid box. I'll have to try it the next time I see creepy crawlies.

From what I have seen posted about poultry protector, it does not kill mites but repells them. If you have a large infestation, one that will kill chicks at hatch, you will need something stronger.

Spinosad is Organic so either something like captain jacks dead bug juice or Elektor is a good choice.

I keep intending to order some Spinosad. I don't like to use stronger insecticides but if a chick or chicken has a heavy load of pests, I would rather use something stronger than to lose the chick/chicken. The little ones are especially vulnerable. It is the young ones that died from the stick tight fleas at the farm.

Especially when dealing with such rare breeds.

Spinosad is very toxic to bugs but not to birds.

Even the bugs have to eat it.
