California - Northern

hi Deann! and everyone else! similarly not on BYC much these days, but have slowly established a relatively solid flock of isbars, and one pen full of silver campines -- i also still have some marans hens (although no longer the rooster, he became aggressive last year & was too huge to tolerate any behavior in that direction), so have a good colorful combination of white, green, greenish-blue, and dark brown eggs...
That is great!

The eggs, not the Rooster.

Processed my first chicken completely on my own start to finish today. 37 week PP cockerel who decided to attack my daughter dressed at 3lb4.9 oz no neck, A bit on the small side compared to my other pita boy who is about 10 weeks older and looks much nicer and on par with his CLB hatchmate who is easily as big as he was. Maybe now the crowing competitions in my back yard will settle down.

Had to pluck by hand but wasnt as bad as I thought. Took me about 2 hours start to finish.

I am a fisherman and a hunter, and just can't kill something I have raised from a baby! Kern

You where a little late, it was on Saturday, but you can find the info for the next show on Wild West Seramas I will probably have some birds for sale for the fall show

It was much easier to do it knowing that he was attacking people. In order to do it I have remain objective that they are livestock/production animals. Part of the reason I do not raise the mini chickens. I give them a good life and they just have one bad day. I thought I couldn't do it either at first and I know that there are a lot of people who couldn't and I respect that. I just don't let myself think about it too much. I thanked the poor boy for the meat he would provide. If he wasn't such an aggressive guy I would have probably re-homed him. I'm not callous about killing and processing them I don't specifically raise them for meat I just try to give them the best life possible knowing that one day they could all go to freezer camp (ie the date is not planned in advance but is acknowledged at the outset) I guess that preparation in mind set helped a bit when the time came.

i am not quite there yet but i have become better at re homing to people i know might or will eat them..the roosters....like you said you have to separate. i give them the best life and re home to people who will do it kindly...i feel HORRID when i have to leave them locked up for a day or two and then i remind myself that their life is so far superior to egg farm chickens and they will be fine.

I just started processing some of my flock towards the middle of last year. There is certainly a moral dilemma that can take place when taking any sort of life. I believe you have the right idea and I try to follow the same thought process. I do have bantams and don't think I could ever bring myself to culling one of those roos. They are just to cute.

Agreed! i am very selective about where they go. i just can't have roosters here but i like to hatch..and i got two delawares last year from feed store "sexed" and they were both roos.....so much for that!

90% is over the whole population. I bet both boys presented similarly enough to fool the same inspector
