California - Northern

I have heard more horror stories about lost chicks this year than ever before. I also notice that USPS priority is now 1-4 days instead of 1-3 days.   I gave up on shipped birds years ago.  I would much rather get eggs that I don't have to worry about, or pick up local chicks.

There are plenty of breeders here in Northern California that have chicks if you want nice birds.  If you can't have boys, there are plenty of auto-sexing breeds you can choose from.  For example:  Welsummers (dark brown eggs) Cream Legbars (blue eggs) Amelias (Ron or Jason do you still raise these).   The list goes on.
I thought about ordering eggs for her but she had already been sitting for so long I figured the quicker the better. The first order that came in was Silkies, last week none of the bantams survived shipping. This week was just meant to be, someone on the list cancelled so they had a few extra. With my luck I brought home 3 little boys, and I had gotten down to just 3 roos.

i got eggs from this person and hatched BCM and olive eggers. 707-766-4597 She is in forestville and on craigs list. i went to her house to get them and she had a very nice set up, clean and her flock looked good. kept one BCM who is very nice bird and her eggs are nice and dark. i would buy from her again but i mostly do bantams myself now. i have about 50/50 standard and bantam.

Limping Chicken.

One of my Orp girls is favoring one leg and keeps tipping over on that side. I checked her over, no wounds, no heat, her feet are fine, no protest when I manipulated the leg. Do you think she just pulled/strained something? She's keeping up with the flock, but maybe I should cage her for a few days?

Anyone have any thoughts or ideas?

no i need to move some runs around but raised some fully crele olive eggers. I need to get my rear in gear and hatch more

Does anyone have any Olive Eggers or blue eggers eggs available?
I have Bantam Brown red Ameraucana

Reptiles are fine at someone else's house. I couldn't take the cricket smell, and one always got loose and found it's way upstairs to our bedroom.

I work at The Poultry Palace in Placerville. We'll have Easter Eggers coming in around the second week of April. 8wk old pullets, guaranteed female (we can take back oops roosters). In my experience the hatchery that we get our stock from produces about 80% blue/green egg layers - I have 8 hens in my flock and so far I get around 4-6 blue eggs per day, and not all are even laying yet from what I can tell. PM me if you're interested.

How old is she? Was she vaccinated for Marek's? Is she just limping or are balance issues evident? Did you check the sole of the foot?

In my experience limping tends to get worse when they are left with the flock, even (especially) if it is just a mild strain; it's better that she's caged for a few days.

Can anyone tell me please:
Hatching with the yoke unabsorbed: would that be high temps or low temps?
I had 5 from different breeds
Thank you and I hope your all doing well.

Yolk not absorbed is a development problem. It can come from a lot of things.

Ironically, incubating at too low of humidity can cause it!

Temperature is the number one cause and usually too low. Too high can cause it too. The best thing to do is to get a brinsea spot check thermometer and make sure that the incubator is running at the correct temp.

Make sure that the eggs are turned 4 times plus during incubation.
Add a two hour per day cool down cycle form day 8 to 18.
mist the eggs during the cool down cycle.

Do not go below 25% humidity during the first 18 days. Some breeds like to be closer to 50%. Find a humidity that works for you. There is a mantra out there that humidity is not a set number--do what is needed for the air cell to develop. The problem with this is that it is not realistic to bounce the humidity around in the incubator during incubation. It is best to figure out what works for you.

My advice is to go somewhere in the 30 to 40% humidity and see how it works.

They were vaccinated as chicks for Merek's. It doesn't seem to be a balance issue, it's like the leg is just not able to support her. I'll round her up and get her into a pen. Thanks.
