California - Northern

The hatchlings this week.

Delaware and 3 Pita Pintas. the 2 pitas are still showing signs of being sticky. Egg membrane is powerfully sticky stuff

Hey I am trying to do an experiment on sexing my chicks

I want to do the various feather tests and leg tests and track how accurate they are.

I know there are 2 leg tests one picking the chick up and if it dangles legs or draws them up but I dont know which is supposed to be which

The other test is to turn the chick over and if it keeps kicking its legs its supposed to be one thing but again Im not sure which it is supposed to be

On the feather sexing I know there is the primary growth test but there is also a couple of others such as tail feathers and wing/shoulders but do not know which is which

I think tails earlier is a girl trait
Any help on this would be appreciated

I met someone who swears that a chick that kicks is male when held by the scruff. I hadn't heard of putting them on their back.

The hatchery pullet chicks do seems to get tails quicker than the few boys I've gotten. That said the two chicks I got for my broody have feather shoulder caps. I did mention I had probably brought home 2 new roos.

I was able to feather sex my Wyandotte's, 2 rows were girls, single length wing feathers were boys.

I have put poor Venetia in the broody breaker. Hopefully she gives in quickly. She was a terribly neglectful mother and won't be allowed to have chicks again.

Have fun but never rely on "stuff" like that for selling chicks...unless you want un happy customers.

You can tell gender with the Pita Pintas at 6 weeks old. If it is very important to know gender, get auto sexing breeds or breed some sexlinks. Mottled counts as barred so you can make black sex links with pita pinta.

I think it depends on the breed. With the Orpington chicks I hatched last Fall, the ones with the tails that came early seemed to be mostly roosters.

I have hatched eggs from Joe's Market in Oakland twice and have more in my incubator now.  They are beautiful white chicks and some have a black dot or three.  Someone who bought some from me this time or year last year, was in, and said they are really nice birds and lay lot of large eggs.   Kern

We bought those birds and they are great (daily) layers of XL light brown eggs. They're also very friendly and let the kids and grandkids pick them up.

I wasnt going to do this for selling I was only doing the experiment to test the results for myself.

I am in Stockton, I considerer us hands down Northern California. I would say the dividing line should be around Bakersfield or Kettleman City if it ever came down to it.
