Very cute too bad they are a bit young to put with my 6.5 week old pitas outside. and too big to be with my near 2 week old ones in the garage. I am looking for an Orp male to breed to my hatchery buffs and a lavender would probably be nice..

I can grow them out a bit longer if you think you might be interested. They are actually lavender cuckoo though. Their temperament is really nice.

Is it possible to get rid of mites for good? I treated all of my coops (sprayed the heck out of them) and my chickens with the Elector PSP and I still got a mite on me after picking up one of my chickens. I am really grossed out by the bug thing. Please advise

They go away but come back--from wild birds and etc.

Threat them three times one week between treatments. Spray the coops Monthly with elector psp.

You might want to alternate between elector and permectrin. Something to keep resistance down in the mites.

Do you mean spray the chickens 3 times in one week?

No, three weekly treatments. Treat them, wait a week and treat them and then wait another week and treat them the third time.

You need to kill the ones that hatch from eggs. The poison does not kill the eggs, only the adults.

Does anyone know what kind of genetic issues could cause chicks to die right before hatching?
I've been setting batches of my R.C bantam eggs since late February, and haven't gotten a single chick. I've tried different hatching methods (incubator/broody) but they consistently die around day 17.

You would need to check into the breed to see if there is a fatal gene. It is a different gene depending on breed.

It does look like there can be problems with the RC gene:

not much to do ourside so thought I would post a couple interesting poultry items
Poultry(occurs in other species also) carry some genes which are lethal; some lethal genes are heterozygous(1 copy) and the bird with this gene will not survive.
other dominant lethal genes require 2 copies for death to result.
The creeper gene(Cp) as in Japanese bantams and the ear tuft gene((Et) as in the Araucana are examples where 2 copies assure death but 1 copy has an effect on the offspring for that genes trait.
Other genes such as frizzle (F) cause a defect in feather structure and also are connected to other problems such as enlarged heart, spleens and the gizzard. The (Lav) lavender gene is associated with poor feather quality, the rosecomb(RR_ gene can be associated with low fertility in certain rosecomb breeds.
Many times the chicken can function normally with these deletrerious and lethal genes in a hetero state and are used to create breeds. The japanese bantam, the Frizzle, The Araucana, are just a few.

Try a different cock bird for breeding.

I don't know but that's been exactly what's happening with my Bantam Cornish pair! They are gorgeous quality but I'm only getting 50% fertility
in the first place and all of my eggs which did develop died between day 15-17. Ugh!
