Oh he's adorable!

yes he is and he is a sweetie!!!

Good, I'll try it out then! We are in Glen Ellen - similar climate it seems. I just hope we are not going to go up into the 100s too much this summer, I find the high nineties challenging enough! I am so glad it does cool down at night, though. I was a bit worried about the huge day/night temperature fluctuations here, but then I read that the chickens actually handle the heat better when it cools down a lot at night. Not so surprising I guess, we sure do too!
Oh, I was going to ask: Love your name - is it after Coco's kitten?

Yes! Just added info about it...suddenly realized lots of folks might not know about the signing gorilla and if you don't the name might sound dirty...!!!

Boy, if you can do it, a hardcover roof over a coop and run is a blessing! We built a patio roof over our coop and during this heatwave the hens have huddled under it's shade most of the day. Easy to hose down the slab too once a week. The wet cement slab offers them a place to sit and hang out while this blasted heatwave is going on! The outside faucet is located by the coop and I leave it on a very slow drip to keep a cool wet spot for them. By 7:00 a.m. it's too hot to even go out to water our garden!
Sylvester017, thanks for mentioning this! I have a slab by the roo coop and wasn't sure how I could make it chicken-useful...now I'll wet it on hot days! Great idea!!

Any advice on shipped eggs. Sitting on counter now. Most have lose air sacs. I will not be turning for first 5 days then rechecking air sacs. Last time I had some saddle air sacs and forgot to hatch upright. Will be keeping a close eye on this batch.

The slab will need a slow steady drip/flow of faucet water on the slab if there is no shade over the cement - otherwise the hot sun will make the water boiling hot on the cement - it will need a steady flow of cool water over the slab. Before we built a patio roof over the slab we temporarily used a pop-up canopy to keep the slab shady and to keep the water from becoming boiling hot on the cement.

Thanks for reminding me of this.( Not turning the eggs immediately) I will have to try that with my next batch of shipped eggs.
