Oh shoot. I had 2 EE's and never had a problem with poo butts, but I just bought six 2 month old Americauna hens.I sure hope I didn't give myself more work than I bargained for. I just wanted some pretty colored egg layers since we lost our EE, Goldie, not long ago. And hello to everyone. I've been awol from BYC for a while. Stayed busy with the birds and bunnies and dogs and tortoise, sold my geese, lost my 16.5 year old Yorkiegirl, inherited a cockatiel and got married in June :) so alot of changes have taken place here the last few months, but it's good to be back. Now I need to figure out how to change my name on BYC :)I'm looking forward to reading what everyone has been doing, and welcome MamaPenquin :)

If you've already had EEs before then Ameraucana tushies should be familiar to you.  Wow, you've had a lot of stress-causing events lately ~ except for losing your sweet Yorkie all the other stuff should be a positive ~ cockatiels are a hoot as pets!  We rescued our cockatiel that had 2 prior owners and we had him for 8 yrs ~ we totaled his age to find that he was 23 yrs old when he finally passed!

My Ameraucana that I trimmed that underdown off has been fine since.  I can't see that trimming it some hurts anything.  Kern

I've never been one to trim tushes, crests, wings, or eye fluff on our hens but that's just me.  I have the time in retirement to take the extra time to just baby shampoo tushes or feathers and our hens seem to like the airflow from the blow dryer on their feathers ;) !
Yes, my stress level was pretty high. But mostly due to the wedding planning as I did it all, but my wedding turned out beautiful, and everything else has been positive. We were sad to lose our Maggie May, but she lived a very long, happy, healthy life, and that gave me comfort in her passing.
I'll see what gives as my little hens grow, about poo butts I mean. But I'm with Kern, I'll shave those wee tushes if it gets to be a problem:) I figure when you raise and care for six little high maintenance dogs, and I do shave around their hineys, what's a few more butts to shave? Lol

You can have the name changed once. Make sure you like it.

@Happy Chooks
 can help.
Thanks Ron. I think I'll take my chances, and change it:) Here's a wedding pic of us. I'm too darned old to ever change it again, plus Michael is a retired chef, so a girl can't go wrong with that :) I'll check with Chooks on the how to make the name change, bc I tried doing it on my own with no luck.

Yeah doesn't look like a roo to me either. Kind of small comb and wattles for that age.. I could be wrong of coarse and I can't see the back. We have alot of roosters though and 4 brahmas 2 being buff. :)

What? No, he is a roo, no doubt about it. As I said, he was just 12 weeks in the picture. Here is a n

ewer one - after his tail got attacked. Sorry, it was dark, so I had to lighten up the picture and the colors don't show as much. He has thin pointy saddle feathers that are bright orange and bright orange feathers on his shoulders. Bone of the other three have a comb or wattles anywhere near as impressive as this guy, plus he is bigger than all my chickens except the Welsumer roo who is developing faster.

No your right. I see the saddle feathers now lol. The other pic wasn't as clear. Have you tried taking the roosters and housing them alone while you find a home? Ours started fighting so we put them in a bachelor pen. They stopped fighting and got along great. We have now let them out in the yard with the hens and they are still getting along. Can't say it works for everyone but we are free ranging 5 olive egger roosters and 2 polish bantam roosters and so far they are all making nice lol..

I agree 4 is a great number. My australorps get along well with my other breds, I have my bantam brahmas right along side them. Brahmas are even bigger than silkies and mine lay 4-5 eggs a week biggest eggs of bantam breeds good medium sized egg. They are great birds and very docile. They just go with the flow, do well foraging, abs make great broodies. My older brahmas all free range.

Hi curious chickee ~ Question: What are the weight of Brahma bantams? - if you are getting that egg production that is very good - also, what is the weight of your avg Brahma bantam egg? I love feather-footed, crested or bearded breeds (I have Breda, and Silkies). My research indicated Brahma bantam layed 1-2 eggs/week ~ that must average in the the rest of the year they are broody and not laying. It's said Silkies lay only 1-2 eggs/week but we figured that was a yearly average taking into account the time they go broody and not laying because our 2.2-lb and 2.45-lb Silkie hens will crank out 4-5 eggs/weekly 1.25 to 1.5 oz eggs when they're in laying cycle. In their pullet year they were cranking out 6 eggs/week which when they go broody I'm grateful because they need the rest from laying so many eggs for such a little bird.

You mention crested and bearded.
This guy is my CLBxEE mix his mama has a slight beard but his is so much bigger. He is the sweetest guy too. He has a bit of a crest on top now as well. He always comes to me when ever im feeding and loves chin scratches.

Anybody here want some young Fantail Pigeons? I have far too many, they keep reproducing. Varying shades of white and chocolate. Unsexed (since I'm a novice and haven't any clue how to sex them accurately). Ranging from about 2-8 months of age or thereabouts. $10 each. I probably have about 6-8 total I'd be like to sell.

EEs are so sweet ~ an EE mix has also got to be sweet! Cross him with a docile Faverolles and you'll have the whole picture ~ colored eggs (maybe olive?), crest, beard, muff, AND feathered legs

~ I think feathered legs and bearded crests carry the sweetness gene!

Hello everyone! I am new to the website and am in the Sacramento area. My city is approving a change to our ordinance to allow backyard chickens. This show take effect in approximately 6 weeks. We will be allowed to have a maximum of 6 hens and NO roosters. I think I will make a 4x8 coop with an attached run that is 8x8 feet. This should provide 32 square feet of coop space and 64 square feet of run space. Plus, there will be 32 square feet of space under the coop which I'm guessing is where the food and water should go. I can't make the run longer or wider because between the ordinance and landlord (mother in law) I have a designated area for it to be. However, I think this space should be proficient for 6 birds (minimum 4 sq. feet per bird for coop and 10sq. feet for run). They will be able to roam the yard when supervised as well (I have dogs and not sure how tasty she will find a chicken). I'm hoping I can find some already made plans for this.

I would love to start with all 6 birds. However, my SO only wants to start with two-to see how we like them, haha. I'm hoping I can push it to closer to 3 or 4 (or 6) when the time comes. He would like 2 black australorps for egg production. I would also like to have a couple bantams. What do you consider to be good breeds to go along australorps and what would you recommend to stay away from? Also, do feed stores carry these breeds or should I try a hatchery (I was looking at Meyer-there is no minimum between January and March).
My friends work at the Western Feed Store in East Sac& they sell chicks seasonally, if you ever want to check them out when you're ready

Also, welcome! Maybe sometime I'll see you at a feed store!

I'll check with my roommate, he had some interest in baby pigies!
