Thank you! He has a job now but we don't like the Reno area much. Not sure they care for us Californians much either!

JK, they are sweet folks here but I can't talk politics (even mundane things) to anybody here!!! I like Sacramento for a lot of things (used to live in Stockton when I was younger and we came to Sacramento often) but wouldn't want to live in town full-time. Thanks for the tip about the commute. I do hate the traffic jams in Sac! I won't be upset if DH has to stay where he is. He works 4-10hr days and it is nice having 3 day weekends!

They don't pay much though and DH knows he's worth a lot more. Still, in this economy, it's nice just having steady employment!

Oops, I got close to talking politics here! Excuse the reference to "the economy". I meant that in the most generic way.

It's okay Sunny. We won't beat you for it. Much. Unless you're into that sort of thing.

I've been looking at land as well. For "someday". Right now, we really need to be close to DH's work at Mountain View. But someday, we're going to retire to a hobby farm. Maybe in Oregon, where prices aren't so crazy. Maybe in NoCal if something came up that was a REALLY GOOD DEAL. (In california? Hah!) I've been looking up around Yolo County and Sutter County, up near Capay Valley(?) where our CSA is located. If anyone has info on what it's like to live up there, that'd be great. Love the climate in Cali, but not the cost of housing.

Yes DH and I are actually starting to look at Ecuador as a possibility for retirement. The people are very friendly, peaceful, more than tolerant of us "Gringos" and we can live extremely well on just our SS. We need to go for a long visit to check it out first.

It might take us a few weeks to decide (we'll have to test a lot of hammocks to make up our minds).

Besides they are extremely chicken friendly there!

Before I bought my place in American Canyon, I was looking for something similar. I found a really nice area east of Redding - Fall River Mills. Real estate is cheep, they have one of the only wild trout streams in California, and the people were very friendly. It is at just under 3,000 feet, so snow is just a little once a year or so. (except this year, I'm guessing) Look up the listings - you will be impressed. There is also a small hospital in an ajoining town, McArthur, so you can get primary and basic emergency care. Burney is about 20 minutes away, and Redding is about 30-40 minutes away.

I'm familiar with this area. We have family close to there. Beautiful countryside and the water is delicious! Silly thing maybe but after growing up in different areas of California I know what a rarity this is!

I just bought this cute little porch table/chair set from a woman on CL - we got to chatting, and they are selling stuff because her and her husband are moving to Thailand! He turns 50 in a few years, so I guess you can't get some sort of card to live there for retirement until 50 so they are going to be "vagabonds" for a little bit. I think it sounds super exciting though... beautiful place, beautiful people and not the same outrageous medical system.

Yes! Medical costs and quality of medical services are one of the huge pluses of moving out of country. It's one of the things we've been researching.

Ecuador (and Thailand for that matter) are big on homeopathic medicine and use modern medicine as a last resort (including the highly trained medical professionals). The quality of care in the area we're looking at is top notch. They don't automatically give you a prescription and send you on your way like they do here. Actually I really like my current doctor but you have no idea what I had to go through before I finally found a good one.

Greetings Nor Cal's. I'm in Concord [anybody else here in this area], and would love to know when anybody has Polish or other chicks for sale. I just started my chicken obsession and I'm all ready addicted. I guess it beats Farmville on FB right?

Tressa

Oh this is way better'n Farmville! For one thing, chickens won't give your computer viruses or apply software that goes "phishing" on your computer, which is what all facebook applications do everytime you hit that "Allow" button. That's why I never, EVER play or participate in ANY of the applications on FB... I've known a couple of people whose lives were affected after being phished around on Farmville... I don't understand why anyone still uses those apps because the phishing software they contain and the data they send back to TPTB at Facebook is common knowledge, but people do it anyway... go figure. I don't every participate in anything that requires me to hit the "Allow" button---NOBODY should.
