California - Northern

My boyfriend, Johnny, and I spent Saturday through today building a chicken coop! We also picked up our new Marraduna Basque chickens yesterday from an amazing BYC member (ronott1)! Talk about a busy 4 days!! It was hard to be off BYC for that long! I haven't had a chance to catch up on the thread but wanted to post the pictures of our coop and our 8-week old new friends while I have a minute.

The coop is 8x4 and tall enough for us to walk in. We built the coop using reclaimed wood, chicken wire, elbow grease and a lot of guess work! I don't think it was the best idea to begin building with no blueprint or construction knowledge but I think it came out fabulous! The roof still needs asphalt paper and shingles, and the inside still needs permanent roosts and nest boxes (hence the tarp over the wood slats on top.)

Getting to know eachother

Note to self: Leave off all shiny jewelry when taking care of the chickens. I had a pearl ring on that they all went nuts over and they kept pecking until I took it off. Notice how my toes are curled? I thought they were going to see my toe ring and peck at my toes!
Hi Megan,

Great Job! They will be very happy there and I am so glad they got to go to a good home. The little Roo is so friendly. He is the second best out of the 5. My little Seiji likes to cuddle. First chicken of mine to do that.

This is what they started out looking like:

I can't wait to see what they look like at a year old.

They definitely went to a good home. Johnny and I are so excited to have them and will take great care of them! What precious little chicks they are! I can't wait to hatch my own :-) The little roo is very friendly. I was scared of them at first (you have to admit, chickens are kind of scary for a first time chicken owner!) but once I got in there and started petting, I couldn't stop. I am so lucky to have them!!

BigDaddysMom, Zoo and PetRock - Thank you for the kind words about our coop! It may not be professional but it's ours that we MADE.. how awesome is that?!?

Hi everyone, I have 4 cockerels I can't keep, please let me know if anyone is interested, they are free.

1 Silver Laced Wydonotte

1 Silver Cuckoo Marans

1 Splash Marans

1 Blue Marans

Thank you, Elizabeth

Good news! My husband gave me the green light for chickens! Word! I have ADD about which breeds I want. I always keep coming back to the Buff Orps for one of them. I did some research on heat hardy breeds (winters here are really not that bad. 30s and raining- very very occasional freezes. summers triple digits.) of dual purpose breeds. So I am looking at Buff Orps, Speckled Sussex and although smaller I think I want to try a Welsummer. I am opting to try out CL- going out on a limb doing it. haha I found someone local selling Orp, Wyandotte, Barred Rock and RIRs chicks. I am waiting to hear back to see what they have left. It's extremely local to me. I don't know what I am looking for other than bright eyes active looking chicks right? LOL

Darn too bad you live so far away. I'd be interested in a Maran. It's hard to find Marans right now for some reason. I hope you can find someone!
