California - Northern

My best friend Chooklet breeds bantams, PM and I'll give you her email
Thanks Cheryl! This person was trying to re-home them and I wanted to ask the breeds so I could pass the info around. But I will PM you. I am trying to put together a little Cali list of reputable breeders for myself for the future! You're already in it. ;)

I'm not a lawyer, but sounds like he's full of beans. If for some reason the "no chicken" rule gets upheld, keep the coop anyway and turn it into a goat shed or something. You have more property rights to your own property than he does!

When my chickens start laying, all my neighbors will be getting appreciation eggs. We also have a long thin property, about one and a quarter acres, and 7 different neighbors border our yard. Don't have any real complaints about any of them, and I appreciate how lucky we are. Sorry you got a grumpy curmudgeon.

On the bright side, you have a beautiful spot in one of the most beautiful parts of the world! Enjoy!

Sending you peaceful thoughts of serenity.

X2. I don't think he has anything to complain about. I sure hope this turns out well for you.
Good luck!

And if anyone wants to share reputable breeder info for reputable Northern California breeders- I would be happy to add it my list. You can PM me the info if you prefer. After I have a nice list together I will offer it to you all if you like.

Meg- Aww poor thing. I don't know about the ninja sickness that seems to silently attack your babies. Is it just attacking the babies? And could it be an eye injury with the chicken? My ducks would get them from others poking or scratching the others eyes (usually accidental) and I did drops and neosporin without the pain reliever (can be poisonous) and they all cleared up. My gosling though- she arrived as a day old to me with an eye infection. Def bacterial since her mate never caught it. Just kept doing drops and neosporin and time. She is 3 weeks old now and it's almost normal. It's so stressful. I hope someone can help!
If it doesn't make sense - I blame autocorrect. Sent from my sweet iPhone 4s.
Someone on the Barnevelder thread said he thinks they have coccidis (spelling?) based on the pictures. I don't want that disease ANYWHERE near my Basques.. I'm already in love with them and would be devistated if I lost one. I'm going to call the breeder today and ask to just give them back. I don't want my money back.. I just need a healthy house!
I think Ron's idea is perfect. If they associate you with food, you will soon find that they will come running and be under foot, even if you don't have any food!

2 roosts sound very practical. I like what you said about making them modular so they can be easily reused for the big coop. That's smart. I have been reading more about food grade DE, diatomaceous earth. Have you used this? Sounds like a good all around insect/parasite preventative. Still need to look into the PDZ more and see if it can be use similarly.

For a duck lady, you sure are taking a shine to chickens! I imagine, in a few years, you will be telling us about your many breeding projects and your coop-condo-complex! (Chicken math is coming!

Your Basque Rooster is beautiful! So sorry to hear you lost another chick. Sounds frustrating. Hopefully you can get some answers from the necropsy. As for your poor Barnevelder, if you haven't done so already, I would suggest thoroughly checking under those eyelids to make sure nothing is in there. Don't know how many foxtails I've pulled from dogs and cats eyes. (Can chickens get foxtails?) I saw someone post about an eye problem, and she actually removed something that looked like a big piece of cottage cheese from the eye. Pus or something? I'll see if i can find the thread. Good luck!

Found it- WTHeck is wrong with my hen's eye?? HEAVY PICS- graphic Hope it helps.
It is pretty frustrating. I was so frustrated at first I just about gave up.. but then I got my Basque's and they are so hardy, happy and healthy I can't give up now! Thanks for the link. I will look in her eye when I get home and see what I can find. There's no swelling. It kind of just looks like a second eye lid.
Yeah.....
Just ordered some Wheaten Penedesenca hatching eggs...

Now I will have wheaten (well if they hatch) and also my crele's

May have you covered on the Partridge chicks. I'll let you know what the hatch is like!
thanks all for the advice -- i'll just keep being patient with them & bringing food...

unfortunately my next-door neighbor, who will have a (fairly distant) view of the (2/3 built, still empty) coop, is totally freaking out, accusing me of ruining his view and devaluing his property. very frustrating.

best,
laura
Laura - I'm so sorry you're having drama with your neighbor. Like everyone else has said, it's highly doubtful he could take legal action. Keep us updated! I'm sending good vibes your way.. and your neighbors way!!
New to this post! We are in Auburn, CA. Planning a new garden/chicken coop area ourselves.

As for the original question. I have lived here all my life grew up in Chula Vista, CA which is 10 miles from the CA/MX border. So I know So. Cal. LOL I now live here in Auburn and consider the state to be divided in two sections Nor Cal and So Cal. My Nor Cal starts (if driving up from So Cal) in the Fresno Area all the way up to Oregon. It's just a random thought and line that my Hubby and I have in our heads. We drive the state about 6 times a year. North of Fresno seems like a decent location.

Here is a site that shares my opinion not that it is correct or anything. LOL

Welcome to the thread! This is my favorite one by far and it's soooo active! Get ready to learn a lot!
I set my eggs today in my homemade cooler incubator. Hope to get a decent hatch.
How exciting!! I can't wait to hatch my own eventually! Good luck!!

Sorry to hear about the sick chicken!

Good job sending the chicken off for a necropsy

Let us know what the report says.

We will have a high of between 102 and 104 today. Tomorrow the temperature is suppose to reach 106 here.

I am worried about the chickens.

Ron
Thanks, Ron - the sickie is off to Davis. I packed the carcass well with lots of ice, but it's so hot outside I don't know how well it'll do.
None of the other chickens have any symptoms... yet...

Idea for heat relief for chickens:
I don't know if everyone already does this but I collected a bunch of 2 Liter bottles and filled them up about 3/4s full of water. Put them in my freezer overnight and around 1-2 pm I bring them up out and make a biiig bottle bed by fitting them all together. I was worried the chickens wouldn't figure it out but actually they did! They all climbed on top of the bottle nest to cool off in the shade. Reduced their panting a lot! I had put a roost bar in their yard and saw they were hanging out on it (it's like 6 inches above the ground)- so today I am going to put the bottles underneath the roost bar so the cool air can rise and try that. They were kind slipping around on the ice bed before. So maybe this helps. My next experiment if possible- an old thin sheet on top of the bottles so their feet can grip but the coolness can get through the thin sheet. The chickens really liked huddling on it yesterday without the sheet!

The Basque Chickens won't have a problem with Cochi. They are almost 14 weeks old and have been exposed to it in little bits so have built up their resistance to it. Cochi is something all chickens get. The medicated feed, theoretically, helps them to build resistance to it. The Basque did not have medicated feed.

Yours did not get Cochi from your place. They can't get that sick with it in three days. You will know for sure when you get the Necropsy report.

Your poor chick with the hurt eye may very well have injured it. I don't remember if both eyes are effected or one. If only one, there could be a scratch to the cornea. There might be blindness.

Hopefully the medicine will help.

Ron
