When I see you are from New Castle I keep remembering going to a family reunion up there when was in middle school(actually it was a K-8).

On my Mom's side I have relatives that stretch back to the Gold Rush days. It's hard to remember exactly what it was like up there but it seems like there was plenty of room for chickens.

!! me too ( well dads side) I always tell people I'm the rarest bird of all, a native Californian for 7 generations! This is why we had to come back after living all over the world, cant break the cycle, lol.

Is there anyone near Redding willing to let me watch them process a chicken? I am really nervous about doing it myself never having seen it. I would be eternally grateful. I know it's a weird request and I'd be invading your space. I don't know who to ask though. I know I could pay to have them done but I would like to learn. I am going to have like 6 to process in several weeks and I'm panicking about it. (Ron when did you say I should process these Marans??) Thanks in advance! I don't know what I can offer in exchange that anyone would value...I am a photographer so I can offer you maybe a few family pictures or some pictures of your critters? LOL I am not equipped enough to offer anything of value to a backyard farmer yet. No eggs- nada!

Or fertile eggs when I get there- but all my chicks are still pretty young. :D

Zooweemama, My DH and I wanted to butcher our 2 cornish X ourselves but didn't know anyone who could walk us through it. Instead, we watched several YouTube videos in preparation. Then, on butcher day, we set the laptop on the table (outside) and played and paused our favorite video as we actually did the processing ourselves. It worked great for us and was so nice to replay anything that was confusing. Overall it was a good experience and surprisingly easy. I'm not sure if we'll do it again (because we don't "need" to) but at least we know how. Oh, and we still have the slip-not hanging in the pine tree, just in case we do! Good luck!

Hi Amy,

I won't be processing for a couple of weeks.

You can do it with a guide as well as the you tube videos. There is a guide here--Use a very sharp knife and not a scalpel:

You really can't mess it up--even a bad job that looks ugly will still taste good
