it took four *intense* days of work, especially with the unnecessary drama from one neighbor, but then thanks to the generous assistance of another (especially with hanging with wire mesh), we managed to get the new chicken coop finished -- here it is last night, when my friend was just finishing the last bits of the roof:
and i attached the last side of wire mesh skirting this morning -- and installed the two cuckoo marans pullets! they seem quite astounded, i don't think they've ever seen this much space before in their 6-week lives:
I've put them in the henhouse part initially, figuring they'll get used to it & then explore out from there when they're feeling braver (not so far today, at least that i've seen). but it feels so good to have a nice airy space for them, and to have it done for the time being! i need a rest from hammering...
and my complainy neighbor seems to have quieted down again, which is a relief.
the cool ocean air is starting to blow in here (Penngrove), so hopefully those of you inland will start cooling down soon too!
best,
laura (and dixie and ethel, which i think are going to be the names of the two pullets)

Wow it's looks amazing!! Maybe that's why your pesky neighbor has stopped complaining! I'm excited for you and your new chicken journey! I had a cat named Ethel. My mom bought two kittens and named the other one Lucy. Lol

You did a great job. You should set up a my coop in your profile. The neighbor probably thinks the chickens will be dirty and stinky. Hopefully you will change his mind now that you have a stylish coop.
Thanks for the wishes for cooler temps. It worked! It is just at 80 degrees now.
Hey Cheryl & all -
I won't be going to the party at the Omelet Ranch after all. I just got some new chickens the other day, & one of them has suddenly started sounding congested with rattly breathing. Thank goodness they're quarantined!!!
I don't want to accidentally spread something to you guys, so I'm grounded till I find out what this is. I'll cull the sick one tonight & send her to Davis for a necropsy.
Okay, so I got a preliminary report from Davis today. The pullet was growing a healthy (?) batch of roundworms
, but other than that, it looked normal. No lesions in the lungs or in the nerves. They took some cultures & swabs - those results should be here next week.
They did note that the head was missing. I forgot to put it in the bag...

Thanks for calming me down Ron! Haha I feel better knowing my Basques are safe! I'm still waiting for the breeder to call me back.
Today I went to The Omelet Ranch and finally met Cheryl (cherylcohen)! I also picked up 3 new members of the family: Silver Penciled Plymouth Rock pullets! They are going to be our layer flock. They are GORGEOUS! Cheryl is doing amazing work!
I also got an incubator for my birthday! So excited to hatch some eggs myself one day. It sounds like an amazing process to be a part of. Woohoo!
Johnny finished the basics of our chicken pen today! The Basque's were so happy to be in there! We're planning on attaching some hanging containers made out of rain gutters to the sides and planting ground cover for the chickens. This is so fun!
