Sounds like maybe they are cold. I had to turn back on the lamp for my 5 week old bantam Polish and buff Brahma chicks to keep them warm enough with the temps dropping.
just went down to my coop, just after the sun went down, to check on everyone -- and the two newcomer chicks (7 week old Delaware & slightly younger australorp) were both totally distressed, making loud sharp insistent peeping noises and taking turns trying to duck under each other's breast, the way they would as a chick with a hen -- they've got lots of food and water, so not sure why they seemed so upset? i at least got them both into the henhouse, which should be a little warmer, and the marans chicks (same age but much bossier) stayed out in the run... but goodness, so upsetting to not know what might be freaking them out so!

poor little girls...

thanks -- unfortunately i do not have electricity down at the coop, but i'm hoping being inside the henhouse will allow them to snuggle together and get warmer... i'm not sure i could catch them again now that it's dark to bring them inside?

At 7 weeks they will be fully feathered and could stand temps down to freezing with no trouble.

They were probably scared because it was getting dark. Chickens can't see in the dark. My Australorps huddled in the corner for several week when I put them in the coop. A couple of nights I lifted the lid on the coop and picked each of them up and put them onto the roost. It took several days but eventually they understood what to do.

I don't have the problem now since I use the Eco glow heater--they are used to being in the dark. Dang, sometimes I think Brinsea should pay me. I really do like their stuff though.

also does anyone in Norcal have Mille Fleur Leghorn hatching eggs?
Wanting some for my next project..

ShanShan from die fly Ranch has some of Cheryl's MF Leghorns. She is or just has gotten married so may not be available. Her website does not list them for sale, but you might want to check with her. She is in Vacaville so is closer.

thanks Ron, that makes me feel better -- they sounded so incredibly upset! none of them has tried roosting yet, and they've been so skittish of me, i've not tried to show them -- but maybe in another day or two they'll feel more comfortable. for the two new ones its only their second night here (and they hadn't "found" the elevated house on their own, had been napping on the ground in the run) -- glad they seem to find comfort in each other's company, and perhaps they'll understand the difference between house & run now...

it is VERY dark out tonight, no moon and still cloudy, and there's no city lights up here on sonoma mtn!

thanks again,
laura

Cheryl Cohen in Concord has them and she sells eggs. Her user name is cherylcohen or her website is Omelet Ranch. What's your project?

Thanks ...
Mille Fleur Penedesenca..
well we will see. I was planning on putting a rooster with a wheaten penedesenenca and starting from there and seeing what happens. plus a hen with the wheaten penese I have.

I wanted to post a quick update on the King Brand Feed Non soy Natural. I have been using it for a month now and the chickens are doing great with it!

If you live near a Feed Store that carries it you might want to give it a try.

Ron
All I live by is Nutrena and Purina. I used 18% All Flock, and when a fair comes around... all the all flock has run out at the feedstore. Did people just remember to start feeding their chickens?

I feed the babies Purnia, also my OEGB's because their beaks couldn't fit pellets in.

My cockerels do that when it's dark and they think they're alone. They're only a month and a half and roost up high now.
